We are close to where there can only be a couple of outcomes.

1) we do slowly start to close the gap to Shell and the US oilers

2) the gap slowly increases, until someone cannot believe the numbers when they do the calculations, and they decide they cannot leave such a bargain for someone else and buy us.

3) something happens to cause oil price to tank and all oil shares tank also.

4) no change in gap to our peers and we all stay miserable

European energy firms Equinor and BP terminated on Wednesday their agreement to sell power to New York state from their proposed Empire Wind 2 offshore wind farm, citing rising inflation, higher borrowing costs and supply chain issues.

"This agreement reflects changed economic circumstances on an industry-wide scale and repositions an already mature project to continue development in anticipation of new offtake opportunities," Equinor said in a statement, referring to a new offshore wind solicitation launched by New York in November.

The solicitation allowed companies to exit old contracts and re-offer projects at higher prices. The winners of an expedited solicitation for offshore wind will be announced in February.

Officials at Equinor and BP were not immediately available to say if they plan to bid their 1,260-megawatt (MW) Empire Wind 2 or 816-MW Empire Wind 1 projects into New York's expedited solicitation.

That’s the fun of a New Year, anything could happen.

I want to reach for the stars.

It’s the last day of the year, and of this quarter for BP results.

When you look at oil price for the last 2 quarters the last 3 months are almost a mirror image of the 3 months before, so average oil price will be very similar.

Don’t think refining margins have been so good this quarter,but think we have had a couple of projects complete, which were not there the whole of the 3rd quarter.

So overall perhaps a similar set of results to last time, and hoping for trading to have sprung a positive surprise.

It comes down to 2 things

Will the market like the results when announced in Feb

Will the CEO be also announced, and will the market like that.

Think it comes down to

When you look back at sp over the last year ,bouncing along about where we are seems to be the norm.

The times sp went higher appear to be spikes.

Next year what drives sp.

Oil price

Recession ( yes or no)

New CEO ( does the market reward or punish new boss)

Divs ( I expect at least a 10% upside).

All could go in our favour in which case £5 must be reasonable.( and hopefully a lot more)

All could go against,but don’t think sp would drop a lot more( even 10% drop from here seems excessive).

Surely if we do drop below £4 someone must have a hard look at a merger a we would be so cheap.

I’m feeling positive,the longer the recession appears as just a possibility the better.

I do expect them to exit, I just don’t think it is going to be their main driver.

If it was they would flood the market with shares.

They are not stupid so they will plan.

And anyone would rather sell for a higher price, so it will pay to wait till New Harbour is showing earnings.

If they were planning a quick sale, there would be little point in having 2 people on the board.

I believe they intend to exit, but are relaxed because, they can now pick their moments.

I also think Harbour have increased the chances of someone making a bid for them in a few years, so I think their stake will be desirable, but only once New Harbour have proved the new assets.

Meaning North Sea oil needs to leave UK to be refined.

If would be nice if there was a few news articles written explaining why Harbour are becoming a mainly non UK company.

And if not I’m sure the company will mention it often

And it’s a direct result of their silly tax.

That’s what I said yesterday, once they have shares in Harbour, they can easily value how their investment is going.

If it’s increasing what’s the immediate hurry to sell.

If it’s not they have 2 seats on the board ,so can influence going forward.

And meantime they even get a div

I see consolidation as the future for the industry, so it’s an easy stake for someone to buy to take over Harbour in the future.

It’s almost like they can have their Cake and eat it.

It’s often good to hear the alternative arguments,as it’s very easy to be in confirmation mode( something I am guilty of with BP).

The more differing views the better decision you can make.

Next year things might just be better.

I think how we feel about shares ,is driven by our entry point,if we bought a particular share for the first time during the covid lows, it’s not hard to feel positive towards it.

If you bought just before covid, it’s much harder to feel positive,unless you had the cash to averaged down during covid.

People like Zac take the emotion out of the measurement of performance and deliberately look at the worst case,and never use the fact that from your original entry point, you may get a fantastic yield, as that’s a historical fact.

It’s not for me but I understand why he does it, and it’s useful to hear it.

The many different views always helps you decide what your own view is.

BP has been a big disappointment there is no getting away from it.

And I think we agree on more than you think.

I just think at some point the underperformance will start to unwind.

It may take either a merger, or the fear of a merger to do so, mean time the company makes money.

Sometimes however you need someone to think outside the box to make people start to think the unthinkable.
