I suspect or believe that this could be the case for the following reasons.
Gold, Lead, silver are much heavier and have a greater density than copper.
Metals such as Gold and copper for instance tend to be brough to the surface of the earth in veins.
For instance, gold is usually found in or near quartz.
I can't remember seeing anything about quartz at BP, but gold is present .
Lead is also present and has about the same atomic weight as Gold
So, as metals come to the surface (prehistoric times), the earth cools and the heavier metals settle below the lighter metals
This is why when you smelt metals the metals separate and settle on order of their weight with other impurities at the top (because they are lighter than metals).
This is a hard rock mine and as such the gold is ancient and settled based on their weight as the earth cooled encasing the metals in the rock.
This is why, I believe that the deeper we do the richer the mine becomes!
Another reason for my belief is because when you find gold (for instance in rivers and pre-historic water (streams and rivers), it's because the water has eroded rock that contains these metals, that have been brought to the surface)
The source of all gold, silver, copper is from deep in the earth and as such, this is the reason why miners talk of finding mother loads in mines as opposed to surface alluvials
This is all in my opinion but have done some research and enjoy the process of gold mining
