I don't think this has been picked up yet but from the Telegraph online - I noticed the article below - it doesn't mention VRFB's but wider application of renewables (solar) in Africa but shows the big European players (EDF) scrabbling to get into the African market...this indicates off-grid opportunities but surely there would also be on grid opportunities (and hence grid scale batteries) which would present further opportunities for VRFBs and BMN in these countries?
The huge opportunities across Africa are being more widely recognised.
"EDF is joining Africa’s booming solar power market by snapping up a stake in home solar provider BBOXX as it moves into Togo in West Africa.
The French energy giant will partner with BBOXX to roll out off-grid home solar systems as part of the race to corner Africa’s fast-growing market for home power systems.
The pay-as-you-go solar kits include a solar panel, lighting strips and ultra-efficient appliances that are typically cheaper for families over the longer term than polluting kerosene lamps and wood fires.
EDF is racing to catch up with fellow French utility Engie, formerly known as GDF Suez, which earlier this year bought Fenix International. The lease-to-buy solar provider is based in Uganda where 85pc of homes do not have access to the electricity grid.
In total, around 600 million African homes still do not have access to reliable electricity.
The scale of potential solar power customers in the African market could prove hugely lucrative to energy companies even while operating on wafer-thin profit margins.
Valerie Levkov, EDF’s Africa and Middle East boss, said the partnership marked “a new stage of development” for EDF’s African ambitions, which have accelerated since its Ivory Coast subsidiary Zeci was set up less than two years ago.
He added that the deal supported EDF’s 2030 strategy to triple its activities outside Europe and grow its global customer base to more than 35 million.
EDF and BBOXX plan to corner a third of the Togo market of half a million homes. EDF is already present in neighbouring Ghana and the Ivory Coast.
For BBOXX the deal is its latest tie-up with a major utility after agreeing a deal with GE in the Democratic Republic of Congo."
