Yes it may seem that Putin couldn't care less about a default but the mere existence of external debts suggests that it has been necessary up until this point. The oil is a good earner but they will need extra cash to service the interest on any future loans. Their credit rating will deteriorate and the interest rates available to Russia will be rising much faster than those of other nation.

Either higher interest costs or an inability to borrow will force Putin to cut spending. Less government spending translates in to a less effective and / or shorter war effort.

Just my opinion of course but I think the default issue is pertinent to the time line of the incursion.

The potential for Russia to default on external debt will be a big factor that is focusing Putin's mind. He must appreciate the wider consequences for Russia would be disastrous.
