But it does fit with their political leanings and more to the point, it is one of the (few) potential revenue raisers that in itself will not likely see a contrary economic reaction. Unlike the raising of employer NI for example.

I do not think it will additionally raise much of the money that would have been spent abroad, being allocated to an increase in domestic holidays though.

Because UK holidays are expensive and generally an inferior experience to that of ones abroad. Especially when you factor in the weather.

I enjoy both, but the domestic ones always cost a lot more than all but the exotic foreign destinations, in my experience.

To a point, most people will simply dig deeper to still go to Spain, Portugal and Turkey etc, so the government will get that extra duty income, but not the double bubble.

Expect to see them cite 'climate change' as the reason for this additional theft.

All of which could mean this type of name is a good buy, as the market might price in bigger declines in footfall and revenue than might actually happen.

But that is predicated on wider economic issues/recession not happening. Which would impact these names significantly. For a period of time anyway. That would probably be around the time I would take a position myself. If/when they get bombed out.

Extra tax on fuel seems likely. Thought that was already essentially pre-announced by RR, but I do not pay much attention to the mainstream political or economic news, so I might be mistaken.

Those various inside sells do not inspire confidence, although inside buys and sells are not always a reliable bellwether, I have found over the years.

Well, I found that post one of the more amusing I have ever read on these chat boards.

A shorter, who had posted some ultra FUD comments in the lead up to results. Not careful, nuanced and dispassionate observations, as some shorts do (and which I fully welcome, even though I have to date never shorted a stock personally).

You cannot get more of a zero sum game than short versus long. One side is always going to be unhappy!

And no way would that poster have been humble and gracious, had he got it right. So no sympathy from me :)

It was a good call, but those with doubts were not all shorts with an agenda. The Telegraph article yesterday made some valid points too, IMO. But that said, there were one or two, whose posts led to me to taking a few more myself. Which I commented on at the time.

I am delighted with the price action today. Especially after the audit sign off pending aspect of the RNS.

After the price action over the past few days, it would have come as a surprise if they had printed numbers that showed that the days of raises and dilution were over.

I agree, it could have been worse, but this continues to chip away at long term shareholder value IMO.

Will be interesting to see if this can hold the 4p level, and particularly interesting to see whether or not the BOD put their hands in their pockets, now the window to do so is open.

Well, it will be interesting to see if the Supreme Court agrees with your own verdict.

Personally, I do not see their activities as having been akin to doing 'secret deals' and I do not think that that piece of legislation was passed with this in mind, either.

But, like I said earlier, perhaps there are aspects of the case to which I am unaware. And it is just one opinion, of course.

Presumably, the company would not go to all the additional cost of an appeal if they felt it was a punt - but either way, it seems to me like it could have extraordinary ramifications for a lot of businesses, current and historic, if the SC does not overrule this initial verdict. GLA.

Never been in this one, but have looked into the case with a degree of interest since it printed.

Assuming I have understood the ruling correctly, and that there is nothing missing from the reporting of the case that led to this verdict, then I simply cannot get my head around it.

I cannot for the life of me understand why any business would need to gain customer consent to pay a commission or similar to one of their suppliers.

This looks to me like yet another example of state overreach into matters that are simply none of their business.

Hopefully the Supreme Court will quash this verdict.

While we are on the topic of hope...hopefully one day soon, we will get some politicians who understand business, and the need to remove government from most aspects of our lives. This includes the reach of the judiciary, which needs significant reducing as well IMO. Sigh. GLA and I hope it bounces back for you.

I think the quality AIM outfits (which are very few in number) will weather the storm.

The socialists' policies might take the tide out quicker on the lifestyle ones, in an already tough credit environment.

I really do not see this administration lasting too long (hope I'm right, lol) so all being well, a more investment-friendly government will attract money back into the system before it is too late.

So battening down the hatches with many names might be as good a strategy as any.

Must admit, I am increasingly pondering a move myself. Were it not for some family ties, I think I already would have, although I have not yet entirely given up hope that the ship can be turned around.

For all the many negatives, the UK still has a lot of potential, IMO. We just need the right political leadership/strategy to make this an attractive investment destination once again. And a nicer place to raise a family, which is a big factor for foreign investors, I can tell you.

Not going to happen during the current administration of course, but we live in interesting times, so I do not think we are stuck with these cretins for at least two or more terms, as we might have reasonably expected to be the case in decades past, when such a majority was secured.

I have read about the theory of those games being played, with share purchases of different numbers meaning certain things.

I don't buy it personally, but nothing would surprise me I guess.

I think so. It probably took me a chapter or so to get into it, but had I had more time on my hands, I would have probably read it though in a couple of days. As it was, it took me a month or so. IMO, one of those books that I wish I had been aware of when it first came out (1998 I think).

Although back then, as a student, I would have probably not believed much of it and considered it to be sensationalism :)
