The Uusimaa industrial hydrogen valley would combine infrastructure, storage and transmission of renewable hydrogen to serve producers and consumers of hydrogen.

The four companies plan to evaluate the feasibility of different hydrogen transmission and storage options as the first steps towards developing a well-functioning hydrogen market. "

Next steps

The Ballylumford Power-to-X FEED study identified that the

modular nature of electrolyser technologies means the

project can be scaled up over time. The project will now

be progressed in two phases: a small-scale pilot project

and a large-scale project that can provide a solution to the

major decarbonisation challenges facing Northern Ireland.

Small-scale pilot

The pilot project will be up to 20MWe. The green hydrogen

produced will be purified to fuel cell grade purity,

compressed, and dispensed into tube trailers for onward

delivery and sale to transport and industrial end users.

This initial project will facilitate the development of

common standards and protocols between wind farms,

electrolysers, and the electricity and gas networks. It

will also build skills and expertise in a range of areas

such as health and safety, regulation and market

operation, and integration of the supply chain.

Large-scale vision

The pilot project will then be scaled up over

time to a circa 300MWe project, which could be

connected directly to an offshore wind farm. At

this scale salt cavern storage would be feasible

and the hydrogen produced either blended into the

existing natural gas network, or transported via an

100% hydrogen pipeline network to end users.

Agree both - Energy Infrastructure debate was interesting today in House of Commons, govt widely told it needed to move at pace and Steve Crabb ( Wales) particularly emphasised need for floating offshore supply chain developers to be forced to ensure local participation which the Crown Estate are seeking to push in new auctions going forward.

The Offshore Facilitation Forum was attended by developers who recently took part in the Offshore Renewable Electricity Support Scheme (ORESS 1) auction and ports that are progressing plans to facilitate ORE, along with the Irish Maritime Development Office (IMDO), Irish Strategic Investment Fund (ISIF), European Investment Bank (EIB), Wind Energy Ireland, Marine Renewables Industry Association and officials from a number of departments in the Offshore Wind Delivery Taskforce.

The purpose of the forum is to bring the port companies, developers, financing bodies and Governmental departments together, to update on the breadth of work undertaken across the Government system to facilitate ORE development, as well as highlight the opportunities available to ports and developers. The forum provides for further engagement and exchange across key stakeholders at a critical juncture of ORE implementation and project development.
