Well, Manyana, AL Jolson was certainly not a racist, and no-one ever accused him of being one (although I'm not sure that that accusatory adjective then existed), but the Black and White Minstrel Show, which was no more racist than his performances, was taken off the air for supposedly being offensive.
You are right that the racist pejorative used about black Americans is actually derived from the name of a river, which seems itself to be derived from the Latin word meaning 'black,' but one does not use a word that has become a term of abuse, regardless of its etymology.
Unfortunately, the terms 'racist' and 'racism' have been appropriated by anti-West and anti-Israel leftist fanatics, according to whose ideology only Whites and Jews can be racists.
I read yesterday that South African white farmers are being murdered at five times the national murder rate, but it is not even being reported, let alone condemned, any more than the genocide of Yazidis by Arabs.
