Banks are compelled to hold a minimum amount at the BOE by regulation. If interest earned on the money was withdrawn, then banks could simply invest the excess over the minimum requirement into Gilts. In addition any hit from keeping the minimum required amount at the BOE would simply be recouped by banks via lower interest payments to their customer deposit accounts and higher mortgage rates.It would be a bad policy to impose having certain investments made by banks to have zero returns on them, it is only the customers of banks that would end up paying the price.

The price per share has been over £9 a long time ago ,but there is a big difference between a price per share and market capitalisation .

HSBC is reducing share capital on a daily basis when buybacks are in operation, so HSBC's valuation cannot simply be measured by a current share price against historic share prices. That can only do done with a constant number of shares in issue . In sterling terms the peak market cap was at the end of 2017 with a share price lower than the current one. We have of course removed a lot of shares from the market since.
