WASHINGTON, Jan 9 (Reuters) - The World Bank warned on Tuesday that global growth in 2024 is set to slow for a third year in a row, prolonging poverty and debilitating debt levels in many developing countries.

Hamstrung by the COVID-19 pandemic, then the war in Ukraine and ensuing spikes in inflation and interest rates around the world, the first half of the 2020s now looks like it will be the worst half-decade performance in 30 years, it added.

UK house prices rise for third consecutive month

• Average house prices rose by +1.1% in December, the third monthly rise in a row

• Property prices grew +1.7% overall in 2023

• Typical UK home now costs £287,105, just over £3,000 more than last month

Aston Martin Lagonda Global Holdings PLC (LSE:AML) should enjoy a seasonal fuel injection for the final quarter of last year, according to Barclays, ahead of the supercar maker's annual numbers on 28 February.

The "usual seasonal bump" is forecast for the fourth quarter with regards to revenues and earnings improvement, the bank said.

Earnings should be helped by production of higher-margin Specials and increasing DB12 volumes, analysts added, meaning gross margin should cross the 40% target during the quarter.

With regards to the 2024 outlook, the company has already set the scene given that it has pointed to substantially achieving the 24/25 targets in 2024.

"In our view, this should be seen as 'up to' or 'around' rather than precisely guiding for £2 billion in revenues and £500 million of adjusted EBITDA."

"December data indicated that the UK service sector ended last year on a high, with business activity growth accelerating to its fastest for six months as the turnaround in order books gained momentum. The recovery in client demand was attributed to hopes of lower borrowing costs and an improving global economic backdrop in 2024. However, many firms continued to cite challenging underlying business conditions due to the stagnating UK economy and strong pressure on margins from rising labour costs.

"Business activity expectations for the year ahead are now the most upbeat since last May, supported by signs of a rebound in clients' appetite to spend. Staff hiring was the main weak spot in December, with hiring freezes yet to be lifted as service providers sought to maintain a tight grip on headcount.

UK service providers signalled stronger growth momentum in December, with business activity and incoming new work both picking up at the strongest rates for six months. Moreover, optimism regarding the business outlook for 2024 improved for the second month in a row to its highest since last May, driven by hopes of a sustained turnaround in client demand.

However, staff hiring remained subdued at the end of 2023, in part due to strong concerns about wage pressures. Overall input cost inflation accelerated to a three-month high, which contributed to the fastest rise in prices charged by service providers since last July.

Adjusted for seasonal influences, the final S&P Global UK Services PMI® Business Activity Index posted above the 50.0 no-change mark for the second month running. At 53.4 in December, up from 50.9 in November, the latest index reading pointed to a solid increase in business activity that was the fastest since last June. The earlier 'flash' reading was 52.7 in December.

The FTSE 100 is predicted to extend its losses on Wednesday morning, the day of its 40th anniversary, after a big session of falls for US tech giants overnight.

London’s blue-chip index is heading for a fall of around 10 points

The manufacturing sector remains despressed, declining for a 17th successive month in December, amid declines in production and growing job losses, a closely-watched report showed.

The S&P Global UK manufacturing purchasing managers’ index fell back more sharply than expected to 46.2 in December - after hitting a seven-month high of 47.2 in November.

All five of the PMI sub-indices (new orders, output, employment, stocks of purchases and suppliers' delivery times) remained at levels signalling a deterioration in operating conditions.

Rob Dobson, director at S&P Global Market Intelligence, said: “The downturn has hit manufacturers’ confidence, which dipped to its lowest level in a year, and encouraged renewed cost caution with further cutbacks to stock levels, purchasing and employment. “

“With concerns about high interest rates and the cost-of-living crisis hurting demand, the outlook for manufacturers in the months ahead remains decidedly gloomy.”

The FTSE 100 is expected to start the New Year on the front foot amid a raft of manufacturing PMI data, including for the UK.
