Animal welfare is a concern for most consumers in the UK. Surely it would be better to produce our own beef mince in the UK rather than outside. The BBC used beef mince as an example yesterday quoting potential tax of 46%. I’m sure British farmers can produce cheaper than that, make a good income for them, undercut EU prices and allow TSCO to maintain their margin.
Slightly off topic, some big institutions moving away from energy stocks to plant based producers. Whether we like it or not plant based food is a fast growing market. Probably bigger in the UK than Germany, France or Spain. Another example of how Tesco could potentially gain from the UK leaving the EU.

Apart from initial supply issues, supermarkets will source outside of Europe if the item is cheaper. Can see a bit of panic buying in the Mew Year but by the end of Q1 things will be clearer.
As posted before , IMO if a shopper has a weekly budget of £150 a week then they will still spend the same amount. It’s about how they protect margins.
Tesco has remained strong throughout the pandemic, they will take Brexit in their stride.

Good to see John Allan taking the lead on how he sees the short term future post Brexit. As already covered briefly on the bb of possible shortages of fresh food and British shoppers selecting home produced food rather than the higher priced European produce as a result of tax.
Personally I prefer cheddar to Brie so not all doom and gloom.

well put bertram. Any trade deal with EU rules attached will evolve into further bureaucratic knots blindly dragging back into a federalist union. The British people voted to join the Common Market but no one voted to be in the EU.
I think only history will judge the pros and cons of the Brexit vote. I will still eat my strawberries with cream in summer and look forward to seasonal British food in winter. Our supply chains from other counties will grow but not overnight.

My thoughts too. If there are shortages then consumers will still spend their weekly budget on food. Buy more bananas if there are no strawberries. ;)

No one can really tell you that. Some posters may point you in the direction of a company they are already invested in. It also depends on your personal circumstance. Tesco is a good defensive company in uncertain times but if you do want to take your profit then I would sit on cash until the world has control of this virus or look at another sector such as biotech.
Maybe ask yourself why you bought here in the first instance. Not a bad decision if you are in profit.

Absolutely. My understanding is that the pension deficit will be well below £1b with the pension finance costs falling and hopefully a continued rise in assets. Hopefully all the employees in the scheme are made aware of this if only to reassure them of their future. Can only be good for morale.
Maybe a strong case for an increase in dividends payments going forward but anything above 4% in these uncertain times is good for investors.

Tbh not a problem the share consolidation as I am building a position here over the next few months. Bought my first tranche last week. Happy for the sp at these levels and even happier to use any SD payment for that purpose.

Expect or hope the dividend gets adjusted accordingly to represent the consolidation.

Hard to determine whether or not it was a buy or sell due to the spread being so tight and not knowing the exact time it was reported to the market. Too many trades going through with all these A trades.

Great news. You could use the special dividend to buy more shares at the adjusted price. If the yield remains the same then this is a great income share.

So what if you cannot get strawberries or French cheeses in January. Perhaps go back to seasonal food only available from the UK. Imo, people will have a shopping budget to spend on their shop and they will spend it come supply issues or not.
Margins is what analysts will be looking closely at and I’m sure rising costs will be passed onto the consumer.
I can see a good degree of panic buying prior to January 1st if there is a no deal.

Maybe hedge funds moving money to more defensive shares but with all these A algo trades then they can move the sp up or down to suit their own agenda. Bought last week at 2.26 and hoping that the sp moves in a direction that fits my agenda. ;)

UK grocery sales up 10% in November with almost £11 billion in sales. Figures obviously driven higher with lockdown but the majority of the UK is still under the highest of restrictions making that trend continue throughout December. I know not many parties over the xmas period but restrictions will still put more money in the till.

Co Op, M&S Iceland and Waitrose refusing to return cash back to the government. Pity consumers don't vote with their feet.

Could never see any politician or member of the public objecting to the money being kept by the company. The additional staff employed by supermarkets will eventually be returned in kind through tax on their wages by staff not relying on welfare. Simple economics.
Could have got better PR by using the money for community schemes. Food banks for example.

I think the vaccine news was already built into the markets. Understandably the markets are looking a little short term with Brexit negotiations on the horizon. I think after that the direction of the sp will be determined.

Not invested here but on my watch list. You will qualify if you hold shares prior to the sale being finalised. The completion of the sale is in effect the ex div date. The question I asked earlier is whether or not that special dividend payment will be subject to tax. I know it will not be CGT as your investment does not gain any capital due to the sp being adjusted down accordingly.
Could do with a poster who has an accountancy background.
