Many in the MIDD space will recognise the iconic René Magritte painting this image pays homage to. 👇 The point, of course, is to challenge perception: the original painting of a pipe doesn't make it a pipe – but if it helps us understand what a pipe is, it serves a purpose.
The same goes for the tools we use in drug development.
Mouse models are not human beings. They've historically helped us gain insights into how drugs might behave. But if, in certain scenarios, they’re no longer helping us understand what would happen in a human, they’re no longer useful - and should be replaced.
To be fair, mathematical models aren’t human beings either. But – along with more physiological in-vitro tests – they allow us to analyse the totality of evidence (including real-world data) to generate deeper insight into how drugs, like monoclonal antibodies, will behave in the body. And they do this with greater transparency, lower cost, and no need for animal use.
For drug developers and regulators, that’s where their value lies.
At Physiomics plc, we’re optimistic about the recent FDA announcement encouraging the phase out of animal testing requirements for monoclonal antibodies and other drugs. 👇 The more we challenge what’s useful – and what’s not – the better we become at advancing smarter, safer, more ethical drug development.
