RE: Brexit - what a joke!!!16 Sep 2019 13:42
Interesting thread - voted leave .. will still vote leave.. although I admit I never thought this would be so complex or take this long! People must remember why there is so much heat between both sides - different priorities. Remainers believe the economic benefits are key - FoM - current trading bloc - fictionless trade (within the EU). Leavers believe the democracy argument is key - taking back control of borders/laws/trade deals and avoiding future federal plans like Euro army - majority qualified voting on areas like taxation and less powers for nation states.
At the end of the day - it depends on what you think is more important - democracy or the economy. It should be both.
Therefore we should honour the referendum but have a decent transition period and a free trade deal that is similar to the trading terms we have now but allows us over time to change regulations. The compromise I would offer remainers is that we leave (honour the ref) but consider a referendum in 2-4 years time when the free trade deal is ready for signing. After all, all we are currently doing is trying to agree exit terms - more hard work comes after Brexit.
Another referendum on rejoining makes sense but surely revoking or forcing another referendum now on just the withdrawal terms (not the free trade deal) will just keep the anger - hate - and division going for years on end.??
