“We had a high-profile Wall Street firm that came under constant attack,” said Colin Ryan, General Manager for DBS. “None of its clients were able to access any of their websites. They were not happy.”
The Solution
“The solution was Corero’s First Line of Defense, which ensured that the systems were up and running in the face of the most ferocious DDoS attacks. Only Corero has the comprehensive coverage to stop all DDoS attacks, from the traditional network-layer attacks, such as, SYN, UDP, ICMP, to the more sophisticated and much harder to detect application-layer attacks that mimic legitimate traffic.
This in fact was the case with these attacks, and why the toptier ISPs wanted nothing to do with them. The attacks were an application-layer DDoS attack, low and slow, which does not clog the bandwidth as much as overwhelm the target server with repeated but seemingly legitimate requests. Unless the attacks were network floods filling the pipes, the ISPs washed their hands of it.
Similarly, the insurance company was not a good bet either. Rather than issue a check, they would do a complete security review and look for any holes as a reason not to pay. Plus, the review is very invasive and would expose sensitive data to a third party.
The client needed a solution. DBS had been reviewing DDoS vendors, and Corero emerged as the clear winner. It was the most innovative, responsive and cost effective. It stopped the DDoS attacks cold.
“It was installed in 45 minutes, and it was like shutting off a water faucet,” said Ryan. “Hackers stopped, traffic delays were gone, and the firewall was back down to single digits.”
Attacks were stopped and visible on the Corero device as they happened, and at that point the Corero device was not even fully tuned.”
