The difference is shorting dumps large quantities of shares in conjuction ( if proven this is ilegal but goes on ) with others at a specified time.Supply and demand dictates excess shares price fall, shortage price rise, but if you dump a million shares on ex div day for eg you can cause a snowball effect greater than the sum of the parts because of stop auto sells! Buying and selling is taxed borrowing is not but should be. The lame argument in the past has always been that without shorting there is no way to bet " against" a shares price and that shorting keeps companies honest lmao. Well there are plenty of ways you can bet against a share price now as mentioned soooooo time it was outlawed or better yet punitively taxed to make it very unpopular and raise tax revenues ??? imho

thing is if i believe a share is due a fall i can use cfd !! ergo the only reason to short sell is to manipulate markets !! I mean apart from the stamp duty issue if an individual wishes to bet against a share without manipulating the price they can use spread betting,cfd and other mechanisms.The only reason to choose shorting over these is the knowledge that your sale will affect the share price !! which could be difned as manipulation,in the abscence of cfd and spread betting it could be argues that there is no mechanism to bet " against" a share price but seeing as there are several ways to do so perhaps its time to disincentivise shorting directly ???

Almost, should the shorter " borrow" but for whatever reason not "sell and then buy back" to return then they have become a defacto holder without paying stamp duty ?? So in effect apart from paying the lender i fee ( i presume ) they have had the advantage of being able to decide a course of action ( sell or not, ie become a hsorter) and if they then decide not to short for whatever reason, they have not paid stamp duty at all, the lender may benifit from this decision but the exchecker will not ???

I agree, however as far as im aware if you " borrow" shares in order to sell them there is no stamp duty until you actually sell them so in effect you are a "holder" but have not paid stamp duty like the rest of us plebs !! If im taxed for buying and they are not for " borrowing" then far from disadvantaged they have a definate edge,stamp duty on transfers and no tax right off for the lender for any share fall on shares out on loan seems to be fair and far from penalising shorters/lenders seems to me to bring them onto a level playing feild with the rest of us, dont you think ???

of course i said it was a tiny change but tiny changes can help! but if the minimum stop loss were to be 1% do you not see how that would have an effect ? i dont know just an opinion.The stamp duty change re.buying/selling and when " borrowing" shares to short or when naked shorting ( if still allowed) would i think have a greater impact, but again just an idea/opinion.

I have thought for a while that buying and holding shares should be tax free while selling ( and loaning )tax should be raised to offset it, and a few other tweaks would help to bring a little stability, first offering stop losses should only be allowed in % term, so whatever platform you use you should only be offered a choice of % ie " set stop loss at 1% 3% 5% of share price rather than a £ and pence choice,seems like a tiny change but having stop losses too tight makes smaller inexperienced investors vulnerable to manipulation. A £30.00 share can easily fluctuate £2 in a normal days trading( talking highs and lows ) and a stop loss of 20p is almost certain to be triggered,i dont think these changes will happen however the MM and the exchecker have too much to lose and im unsure if naked short selling is still allowed but any shares loaned out to shorters should require the shorter to pay stamp duty as if they had purchased them making the shorters contribute to coffers like the rest of us.All just my twp pence worth and nothing more.

I think over sold as well fwiw ! Maybe its brexit,maybe its the previous crash causing twitchy bum time as often as it does who knows but, Bdev,provident, dixons carfone, once a fall starts it seems to gather momentum really fast and often overshoots ??? Dixons bouncin around a fair bit but im confident they will come good, maybe not a recovery but for sure 2.25 looks realistic until results but wtfdik :) My hindsight vision is 20/20 but looking forward im as myopic as the best of em.

have jupiter europen fund doing me proud @ 14% this quarter an indian and japanese fund flatlining but nudging up and right now a whole lotta bdev and dixons we will see !

Well a very odd day i must say, dropped 4% on a solid set of figures rns and gained 4% out of the blue on a speculative belief that dixons sell off was overdone ??? its like reading the form before a horse race,its only useful so you can be a smart arris on the rare occasion you get it right :) educated guess/punt/trade somedays there is no sense to it.

i could be missing something but if bought at £6 and went back to 6.26 on dividend day and sold that day then 34 divi and 26p sp rise equals 60p which is 10% of £6 is it not ???

Well @6.00 with a 34p divi in 7 weeks if this gets back to 626 then thats a %10 return in 42 days ?? correct me if im wrong but thats sub prime lender returns lol So thats quite a lot of "wonga" "amigo","sunny" days ahead,! you may find better returns if you can "ferratum" out :) ok im out of payday puns now

Well at these price's the fence sitters only need a recovery to the price yesterday to be looking at a aproc 10% return in 7 weeks ???? makes me wish i had a little more liquidity :)
