RE: Why the drop in sp9 Nov 2020 21:19
I think the news about a possible vaccine is good but the reaction to it premature .Clinical trial patients in early phases tend to be young and fit and few, if any, ongoing medical problems. Those most at risk are the over 80's ,with multiple medical conditions and multiple medications -these will be the first in line to be vaccinated .I suspect there is currently limited data about efficacy and safety in this age group ,another at risk group is the BAME group -again there needs to be efficacy and safety data, and if a younger cohort of patients were used in early phases of the trial they handle side effects, in my experience, much better . It will take 6 weeks from first dose (2 are required ) to establish immunity-how long it will last and what degree of protection it will offer, and will it stop the virus spreading we dont know esp in this age group. There is a lot financially and politically at stake for the vaccine companies ,so rigorous examination of the data wil be required and of course lack of long term data may put some people off having the vaccination .The announcement of a potential effective vaccine is tremendous, the devil may be in the detail
