US close, nos etc..22 Nov 2023 06:57
Inevitably the rally in equities ran out of steam on profit taking after hitting their highest level since August. The 500 and Nsdq snapped a 5 session win streak ending little changed by close.
Policy makers on the hill, wrestling with conflicting signals agreed to proceed with caution keeping Fed Funds rate at 5•25%, in part due to house sales tumbling to the lowest level in 13 years. Despite the high level of rates and cost of living expenses 40% of US citizens own their own home outright.
Retailers suffered the brunt of selling, Lowes sank 3%, Best Buy dipped 2% but Dicks Sporting Goods bucked the trend rising 2% on stronger profits and revenues in Q3. Overall companies on the S&P 500 are on track to deliver their first y-o-y growth in earnings per share in a year.
Gold had a strong day with gains over $20 in physical and futures fixed at $2001. Currently Gold ($1999) is 9% ahead this year but off its all-time high of $2085 last seen in May.
