At the bell investors sold into Friday's rise believing the 2 year tech 8000 points resurgence is running out of steam. The Nsdq 100 slipped to a low for the day at 18,393 before ending 64 better. Taking money off the table being the prudent play, the Dow slid over 400 by lunch. Having overcome technical glitches that quoted Berkshire Hathaway "A" down 99% at one time and misquoted 40 other stocks, play was suspended for a couple of hours.
The Dow clawed back most of its losses in the final hour to end a volatile session down 125. Only 11 of the big board 30 rose led by yoyo stock Boeing, Merck and Amazon. Propping up the laggards Cat, Chevron and Dow inc. Nvidia immune to the gyrations of other techs added $53 to $1150 an all-time high. At $2•828tn Nvida is pressing Apple for the no 2 most valuable global company spot.
Making the headlines GameStop the worlds largest video game retailer's shares surged 35% to $28 after celebrity Keith Gill (aka Roaring Kitty) posted a screen shot of his $116m position. The post revealed he holds 5,000,000 at an avc of $21•27 plus 120,000 call options worth $66m set to expire on June 21st.
GameStop is up 87% this year but off its historic high of nearly $70 when Roaring Kitty fans took on the Wall St short sellers in a fight to the death causing hearings on Capitol Hill back in 2022. Neither Mr Gill or GameStop responded to email's seeking comment.
Elsewhere AMC the other one time wonder stock rose 13% to $4•91 on re-ignited interest in meme counters. Some of the bigest moves came in heavily shorted stocks, Koss Corp, Vin Autos, Tupperware & Blackberry which are susceptible to short squeezes. Back in 2021 AMC traded as high as $250 spurred on by Robin Hood punters before imploding.
Waste Management Co reported it would buy the Illinois based medical waste firm Stericycle in a $7•2bn deal. WM will acquire the outstanding shares for $62 in cash and assume c.$1•8bn of debt. Stericycle stock gained $8 to $59, WM lost $10 to $200.
At the losing end of the Street Hertz Global ($4) sank 5% after the Chief Operating Officer Alexandra Brooks decided to stand down. Coming in as new CFO Scott Haralson ex Spirit Airlines will join Gil West (CEO) another airline industry veteran to run the company. Attempting to sort out Hertz who lost a bundle on a fleet of Tesla EV models which plummeted in value after Tesla slashed prices, has left the management with hefty fleet repair bills, crushing debts and Q1 losses of $392m.
