An hour into trading the Dow was down 430 dragged lower by Apple
(-$8), GS -7$, Boeing -$9 and Msoft off $3. All the hard won gains in 2018 wiped out in just a few sessions such is the volatility of US mrkts.
Heavyweight results have been disappointing, Target the latest to dissatisfy on Q3 shares fell 10%. Lowe another casualty and of course Apple ($177) which cont its slide off 5% & back to par for the year. No big board stocks gained during the session.
The Dow down 650 at one time closed off 552 (24466) the 500 fell 49 (2642) & Nsdq fell 120 (6909) down 14% from high and in bear territory.
Oil futures tanked 7% and the S&P energy sector led declines pulled down by weakness in Chevron & Exxon lower by 3% each.
No-one is riding the tech momentum anymore snatching fast disappearing profits if you can is the main aim of investors. Other Techs hammered yesterday were 3M, IBM, Cisco, United Tech all c.2-4%. What looks like an overdue correction in techs might turn out a lot worse.
No agreement on trade ahead of the G20 summit is a continuing concern dogging global mrkts.
Earlier London closed lower knocked by the poor start in NY, the ftse fell 53 (6948) the 9th straight losing day, the 250 down 174 (18366). Miners, Airlines and House builders led the ftse lower
as investors become more and more risk averse.
BOEs Carney broadly supports Mays Brexit plan, Sterling marginally up v $ & €. Halma was a bright spot on HY nos better than forecast. Conde Nest is closing down 'glam' mags! Overall London reacted calmly to the rout on the Street but we are well ahead in the fall off in mrkts compared to the US, ftse down c.10% the Dow just 1%. London called better at open.
Asia started poorly down over 1% across the region but stocks have rallied in the afternoon. The Nikkei off one month lows dragged down by energy and techs is off 340 morning lows to trade down 70. Nissan recovered 1% following Goshn arrest for various misdemeanours, allegedly using Co money for personal use just one. He has been dismissed.
HK helped by Tencent is off 41, well off 350 lows heading to the pm session. Oil stock Cnooc sold down c.4% the Hang Seng at 25800 down 14% ytd.
In Shanghai (-4) energy stocks lag the slump in oil the SHCOMP 20% down ytd and back to 2005 lows.
