RE: NO confidence vote is tomorrow17 Dec 2018 20:40
Press comments:
Conservative MPs from the European Research Group (ERG) are seemingly not just prepared to accept a so-called hard Brexit – the UK leaving the EU on March 29 next year without a deal, depending instead on World Trade Organisation (WTO) rules – they are actively pursuing it as the best way to restore Britain’s sovereignty, freeing us at last from all the EU's rules and regulations, while also avoiding any dreaded “divorce" payments.
Meanwhile, the vocal and belligerent advocates of the “People’s Vote” will likewise settle for nothing less than total victory – meaning in their case a halt to Brexit altogether. When supporters of a second referendum claim to be humble proponents of democracy, interested solely in giving “the people” a final say on any Brexit deal, ask them if they would settle for parliament unilaterally cancelling Brexit. They'll snap your fingers off.
It would take a remarkable degree of blind faith to convince most people that having a second referendum, one with Remain as an option, would do anything other than make our divided society even more so, perhaps to the point of no return.
It is one thing for some (though not all) in the Remain camp to denigrate those who voted Leave as racist and stupid. It is quite another for those campaigners to get their way, and to overturn a democratic decision on the basis that the votes of people who are supposedly bigoted and thick don't really count.
Name-calling and insults have become a regrettable part of our national debate, but if those slurs become all the justification needed to ignore people’s votes then those affected will have a legitimate and serious grievance
