Actually gentamicin is given to both children and adults.
Gentamicin is an antibiotic used by the NHS to treat serious bacterial infections, and it can be used in both children and adults. However, the dosage and administration differ depending on age, weight, kidney function, and the type of infection.
• In adults, it’s often used for infections like sepsis, urinary tract infections, or chest infections.
• In children and newborns, it’s commonly used for severe infections like neonatal sepsis or meningitis, under close monitoring.
Because gentamicin can have side effects (notably to the kidneys and ears), it’s usually given in a hospital setting with blood level monitoring, especially in children.
