Home Retail Group (HOME), the owner of Argos and Homebase is due to release its first interim statement on Thursday. On May 1st, the company reported a 10% fall in underlying pre-tax profit hit by weak consumer spending – Homebase profits slumped more than 50% to just £11m even though CEO Terry Duddy was awarded a 41% increase in salary and bonuses for an overall pay package of £1.55m. This raised a few eyebrows given that profits had fallen for a fifth consecutive year! However, on the upside Argos has experienced a recovery, with operating profit up 10% to £91m. The interim statement will need to show more of the same, or Mr Duddy’s package will again be called into question.

In corporate news, recent chartbreaker pick Tate & Lyle (TATE) reported finals on Thursday. Galvan Research highlighted the dip in the share price as a buying opportunity ahead of the results, and although the general market volatility has kept a lid on any further upside, T&L certainly delivered a solid set of numbers and confident outlook.

Langyy stateside, the Unemployment Claims are reading is due on Thursday. Initial claims for state unemployment benefits dropped more than expected last week, falling 23,000 to 340,000, according to the U.S Labor Department. A U.S strategist said the recently lower initial claims readings “have continued to suggest improvement on the layoff side of the labour market equation and should prove marginally positive for the May nonfarm payroll report.” The U.S economic recovery is very much in the spotlight after the OECD praised Washington’s successful re-capitalisation of its banks, which allowed the banking system to get back on its feet and kick start lending to households and businesses. The OECD believes the US economy will grow by 3% next year in contrast to the UK,.........

In March, Bellway reported a 50% rise in profits in the second half of last year, and said that sales reservations in the period were more than 10% higher than a year ago, and it has already achieved 94% of its full-year sales target. Bank of America has upped its target price from 1135p to 1440p, although it retains a neutral rating.
