Sold half my position at 300 just before US open as the whole thing felt eerily similar to last Friday to me, and also wanted to get into PFC. Who knows if the second part of that sentence will turn out to be a good move, but I’m glad I failed in my aim to stop watching the SP! Will buy back in if it hits 280, otherwise waiting for PFC to move upwards

Let’s hope so! Have been watching from the sidelines for a while, just bought in 10k at 106, at this price it seems an absolute steal, but let’s see how low they can push it..

I see US to declare China is committing genocide. Quite apart from the politics of it, what impact do people think this will have on oil?

For GME just follow the memes on r/wallstreetbets. There is a lot of talk about the Mother of all short squeezes (MOASS) at the moment, as GME was (at least until recently) over 100% shorted. Whether it will work or not who knows, I doubt it, but I’m curious to see what happens when big hedge fund shorters collide with a large internet community. I’ve put £500 in just to be a part of the fun, doesn’t really matter if it drops 90%.

Saw that, oh well, still well below what I sold at to get into BP so definitely up overall! Im just rolling with BP now for the next couple of months at all, though I am slightly tempted to take a small amount out to throw into the GME madness today just for a bit of fun..

You’re right, I was a bit of an idiot, I just had flashbacks to how well it had gone for me with rolls royce, with everyone certain it was going to hit 150 relatively soon, followed by the big drop that hasnt yet recovered.. anyway, watching today I lost the strength of my convictions that the sp will drop dramatically, so I got back in on a dip to 299. Cost me 120 shares after stamp duty factored in, which will certainly teach me a lesson. Anyway, wobble over, back to holding for the longer term and trying (and failing) not to watch the sp all day..

Wish I had your foresight! I sold at 298 this morning, hoping to jump back in around 290. If it doesnt hit I’ll probably buy again at the start of next week to be in good time for results and dividend

Not selling or even particularly worried by current drop, just wondering what people think has caused it? Just usual market movements or is there some news I missed?

Always seems to pull the price down at the moment. Not worried in any way, and carrying on holding, just wondering if anyone has any idea why that might be the case? Is it the market reacting to a difference between BP and BP ADR or are there other reasons?

Thanks for all your answers, it makes sense! I have to say one of the hard things about being a teacher during remote lessons is how easy it is to have the stock market up on a tab all day.. I am currently also only in companies that I believe in right now and probably wouldnt sell if they gained or lost 15%, but I can’t help myself from monitoring even though it makes no difference!

I get the not looking at the share price daily thing, and wish i could do the same, but in which case why come onto a share price forum so frequently, surely that defeats the point?

Genuine question as I am curious about the mindset of the long term hold. If you believe the share price wont go up for a while, why hold during a period of no dividend rather than switching to a share with more immediate growth potential or which pays dividends, and come back to RR in the spring?

Divide by 6 and convert to pounds I remember reading, so £3.05 which would indicate a pretty flat open.

RR101 I can’t speak for everyone but I will get back into rolls when I feel absolutely certain that air travel is going to recover to a decent level or if my other recovery stocks get close to their previous value and RR remains low. In the first case I will obviously miss out on the cheap shares, but until such a time I think you have to ask yourself why would I invest in a company which is losing money and in an industry that may take a time to recover, when there are other battered stocks out there which are making money in industries that should recover quicker than long haul aviation? That was my logic behind moving out of RR and into BP, which may end up being a poor choice (who can tell) but which comes with a lot less daily stress! Essentially I feel that yes, rolls royce probably is a great value buy right now long term, but there are less risky value buys out there, so in a free market why would I choose RR? Once either RR is less risky or other shares are less good value then maybe others like me will come back.

Related noobie question, because presumably a number of people do this, does SP dip on the 5th and increase on the 6th? Or is the Retail investor ISA market too small to make that kind of effect.

Thanks for your detailed answer. At the moment I have 40k outside an ISA, which started life this year at 29K. Lets say BP hits 350 by April, that would be 46.7K, so 16.7k profit, if I do the 20K ISA thing thats 43% of my holding, so about £7150 of my CGT allowance. With the other 26.7K,if I were to hold until a BP share price of £5 (maybe optimistic but hey why not- or maybe switch some to other shares etc) it would use up nearly all of next year’s CGT allowance, so I was considering selling some more BP this year and holding say Shell for the 30 days it takes to use up the allowance, then rebuying, giving me more room for tax free profit next year. Make sense or not worth it?

Speaking of which, rookie question here, but if I sell 20K worth of shares on 5th April then put that money in an isa on the 6th and buy back again, is that all sorted in terms of capital gains tax? I know normally you cant sell and rebuy within 30 days to use up CGT allowance, but if it is moved into an ISA does that change things? Related Q, if I want to use up my CGT allowance this year, what other share would you buy and hold for the 30 days before buying back that should roughly track BP, I was thinking Shell but other suggestions?
