TURKU - FINLAND 03 November 2015 – Faron Pharmaceuticals Oy (”Faron”), the clinical stage biopharmaceutical company, announced today it has entered into an agreement with Swiss-based Selexis SA. Under the agreement, Faron will have access to the Selexis SUREtechnology Platform™ and SURE CHO-M Cell Line™ for the production of high-expressing and stable clonal cell lines for use in the development and production of Clevegen, its novel cancer immunotherapy antibody.

Selexis SUREtechnology will enable the rapid generation of high expressing clonal cells for the production of monoclonal antibodies. Selexis’ predictable expression levels and stability can provide significant benefits to Faron and the technology will facilitate the continued preclinical development of Clevegen as it moves towards clinical development.

Immunotherapy leverages the patient’s own natural immune response to combat cancer. It offers enormous potential in the treatment of cancer and is one of the most actively pursued areas of research by biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies.

Clevegen targets a cell surface receptor called Clever-1. When Clever-1 is blocked, tumour-associated macrophages (TAM) cannot enter the tumour site and their function in the tumour as an immune suppressive cell is diminished. Both these events change the tumour environment from immune suppression to immune stimulation, allowing the host immune system to fight the tumour cells.

Markku Jalkanen, CEO of Faron Pharmaceuticals said: “TAMs have been recognised by scientists for years as a key control element in cancer immune biology. The recent licensing deal for up to $1.74 billion between Five Prime and Bristol-Myers Squibb, which included an upfront payment of $350 million for a Phase I trial in immuno-oncology, demonstrates the commercial potential to Faron for the successful development and commercialisation of Clevegen.”

How is it doing
Immunotherapy treatment Clevegen is on phase I/II trial (MATINS) for metastatic cutaneous melanoma as well as hepatobiliary/hepatocellular, pancreatic, ovarian and colorectal cancers.

Tumour cells are adept at creating a shield around themselves to evade detection by the immune system, therefore staving off destruction.

Clevegen has been designed to recognise cancer and break the cell’s protective shell.

The treatment is an anti-Clever-1 antibody which causes changes in the immune environment of solid tumours by switching Clever-1 positive immune suppressive macrophages to immune active macrophages.

Ultimately, if it is successful, this new breed of treatment will be used in combination with PD-1 inhibitors to tackle the killer disease.

Traumakine

Clevegen has helped the company rebuild after a major disappointment with another drug Traumakine.

A phase III trial as a treatment for lung inflammation condition ARDS missed its target and there was no benefit against the placebo.

Faron (LON:FARN) is working with drug regulators to work out why the results were poor and is confident Traumakine can be of benefit to some patients.

So there is the link, clevegen increases these cancer killer cells and a PD-1 inhibitors makes these cells stronger

so what pharma is working on PD-1 inhibitors;
OPDIVO is a EMA and FDA pd1 inhibitor drug for colorectal cancer which is also one of the type of cancer clevegen are focusing the trials on

Also worth considering is if a large pharma knows we are onto something big then why not go in big so we can develop the drug quicker.

Hence why at the presentation the other night the CEO said clevegen could be on the open market in 2 years

So there are multiple large pharma we could partner. With.
