Daz ....... sensible post M8
Mining production isn't like factory production. Yes the closer the Manager can get to controlling conditions and equipment to being the same from minute to minute and day to day the better the production,
But there are inconsistent (Highly variable) rock conditions and highly variable topography and as we know violently changing weather. That doesn't take into account the Human element. We all react differently to changing and adverse conditions many of which will be very challenging to individual operatives in differing ways.
Ok fire the sods who cant keep up or adjust I hear you say. Unfortunately if you need to be beastly to people and fire them at the drop of a spanner you will have other kinds of problems to cope with eventually. Best to be loyal to your employees and as a Manager work at enhancing their experience and resilience (ongoing Training even) and hence their capacity to deal with change on a daily basis. (some people are good at this and some are good at that)
But accept in the end really difficult conditions will defeat them from time to time. Just hope they have enough faith in their Manager or Supervisors skills and expertise to solve problems and support them so they stay and go again.
I know not very British.
