Inheritance tax and contract notes28 Apr 2018 11:40
This stock is dragging on a bit, so need to think long term, beyond the grave.
HSBC InvestDirect keeps deleting the online contract notes, although thankfully, they do send paper quarterly statements.
I understand a lot of AXM shares are held in S&S ISAs, so you might think tax is not important, especially with the Continuing ISA regime that just started, so it stays ISA until Probate is finished. Even inside an ISA, you still pay IHT, aka inheritance tax, if you have too much money in your estate. Now, as far as I know, non property AIM shares become IHT exempt, if you hold them for over two years.
The problem is, how does your Executor (of your Will, because you are dead) know where to find the BUY contract notes, to prove that you bought them years ago?
Another things is, if you sell and buy back after 31 days, to use up the ~11,500 annual CGT allowance, it resets the two years to zero. If the amount is trivial, you can sell and buy back inside an S&S ISA immediately, but some people have an unwieldy amount to bed and ISA.
The way things are going, AXM will gush just before I hop it, so it's worth more than everything else in my estate.
And then the stupid Executor has no way of proving the AXM shares are IHT exempt, and end up paying 40% to the HMRC. After a life time of using all the tax allowances I can grab, 33%, 20%, I end up paying 40% IHT. Arrrrrrgggghh.
I know, I worry too much.
I need AXM to surge to 10p, then be taken over, by 2020, so I can spend it before Probate.
