Sammy Miller - A legend at Santa Pod! Entertainment only!16 Apr 2021 13:24
Sammy Miller used to use Platinum and other PGMs to decompose Hydrogen Peroxide in a very dramatic way :-)
You take a lunar landing module engine, modify it, and fit it into a fiberglass Ford Mustang car body shell!
It basically consisted of a very strong fuel tank to hold about 30 gallons of Hydrogen Peroxide, two Nitrogen bottles to pressurise the fuel tank and a 3" s/s straight fuel pipe with a valve to open and shut the fuel flow to the rocket motor!
Once the H2O2 liquid hit the platinum gauze in the rocket motor it would violently decompose into water vapor at extreme pressure and generate the thrust, all some 12,000lbs of it, or if you like – 24,000bhp.
Throttle is just ON or OFF, ultimate POWER is determined by how quickly you can get 30 gallons of H2o2 through the motor, and so the higher the fuel tank pressure the more power is generated! you can hear him regulating the fuel tank pressure in this video from 2002, where he is testing out his creation at Santa Pod.
Sammy would pull up to a reputed 13G and at the end of the run require 30 min to recompose, often bleeding from his eyes and ears!
He was a great showman and banned in the US at one time.
0-100mph in 0.36secs.
1/8 mile record 319mph in 1.60 seconds.
1/4 mile record 396mph in 3.58 seconds.
Born April 15, 1945, Test Pilot, Designer, Driver, Builder, and Instructor of Rocket funny cars, dragsters, and motorcycles. World quarter-mile record holder since 1975. United States Congressional Salute and certificate of Merit 1988. World ice speed record 1981. NHRA Division 1 Hall of Fame. Holder of 30 US track and state records. Builder of the world's first approved rocket car 'Spirit of 76'.
The man has a resume that looks more like an excerpt out of the Guinness Book of Records!
Here in Europe Sammy Miller is best known for his Vanishing Point Rocket Cars, 2001, 2002, 2003 which he ran from 1976 to 1986.
Due to popular demand, Santa Pod has brought Sammy Miller back to the UK for 2002!
Here is Sammy out of retirement doing some shakedown testing of his car back in 2002!

Sadly Sammy is no longer with us, he died doing his day job!
Legendary rocket car pilot Slammin' Sammy Miller was killed in an accident on Tuesday 29th October 2002 whilst working in the Texas oilfields for his company Applied Force.
Samuel Miller Jr., 57, of Wayne, N.J., was killed and eight people were injured after the flash fire explosion at an oil well 10 miles west of Crane.
The incident was unrelated to any of his own work. Sammy's career was one of superlatives.
Just enjoy a few minutes of video fun, never to be repeated, sadly!
Only posted up for entertainment! Whist we wait!
And as an interesting use of PGMs of course :-)
Enjoy, turn up the sound first!
