RE: JTMacs16 Oct 2020 17:28
Afternoon, JTMacs, as you have described your past working career and mentioned steam turbines I have always wondered how long to raise steam from cold, I mean if the captain received orders and he whistled down to the boiler room.
The reason as most people find out when delving into their parent's past, unfortunately, after they have passed away is the list of questions they wished they had asked them when they were alive!
My father was a telegraphist/radio operator in the second world war and one of the ships he was on for some time was one of the 50 US destroyers that were given from America to help us out for lend-lease, after being renamed to HMS Newmarket.
These old destroyers were built in 1918 and did have problems with the boilers, they were 30ft wide and 310ft long, powered by 4 separate Admiralty three-drum boilers, 300psi saturated steam to two Parsons geared turbines direct to two
9ft diameter 3 bladed propellers, these things had 26,000shp and could reach a speed of 35.3 kn or 40 mph.
So, my question if you can answer is how long do you think it would take, just interested to know.
All the best JT and thanks for the updates, and have a good weekend, cheers.
