We are not a big pharma that can afford to do this at cost for the PR value. This is not a side project for SNG. We've put £100M into it in the last 12 months and we would like that back for a start please, along with a fair return for the risk we took.

It is not price that is stopping the drug reaching patients. With approval tomorrow we would sell out all we could make. I will be delighted when we're able to drive availability higher and prices down. It will require more investment, whether by us or others, and for that it will need to produce a return.

The range they came up with was 10-50% increased mortality and IIRC that was 4 separate data sets.
Obviously always need more data but it was enough for them to announce a 30% estimate in press briefings.

The hope was that variants could at least be contained. When the same mutation happens multiple times independently within a fairly small sample, that gets ruled out. Preventing it spreading from one country to another doesn't help, because if the numbers are high enough, this mutation looks likely to happen anyway. And already has.

What we want is some basic mandatory qualifications for ministers. We should ask basic questions like 'Have you ever run anything before' or 'Have you ever been repeatedly sacked for lying'.

It does look like they did well on vaccines but who can say whether it was deliberate or just regression to the mean, it's quite difficult to mess EVERYTHING up.

Israel has the most data on the impact of vaccination so far. There was an early sign the other day that most (70%) of people who have had one pfizer shot would still catch the virus, even after 14 days - they're just less likely to get seriously ill.
It should still have an impact on transmission, because people who fight it off better will probably have lower viral loads to spread etc, but it won't make the virus go away.

The Pfizer CEO expressed an aim of being able to develop vaccines from start to approval in 100 days and they are working on the basis that vaccine escape now looks very likely - more a question of when, where, how widespread etc.

Fair point. I am still holding 4 results. But if I'd foreseen a 50% drop, I would have tried to sell some and buy it back. Having failed to do so I am very proud my loyalty to the company is intact :)
