Surely that is what all MMs are doing. On every share. They sell to us at the higher price and buy from us at the lower price?? The spread is their margin i.e. their (major) source of income.

The last going concern statement was 8 months ago so not really that relevant now. Personally I don't think they are in quite that much trouble now but anybody using it as proof that they are not about to fall into the abyss is showing unbelievable naivety bordering on stupidity.

It will be interesting to see if there are any changes in the going concern statement this time around when they eventually get round to publishing the accounts.

Just my experience about the far greater level of nostalgia seen in the media and among people I know for Woolies compared to the relative absence of interest shown for Debenhams (or BHS). Do you have anything to support your view of Debenhams as a powerful and much loved brand (without quoting Kamani)?

Yes, there are lots of plausible answers to that one. The most obvious is that they are looking to raise, after all they have released confident sounding ones before just ahead of a raise. Classic AIM tactic. I don't think that is the case here though as they are well funded on the face of it at the moment so this time they could genuinely be confident but time will soon tell whether that confidence is once again misplaced or overstated. So let's just wait and see perhaps...

Count me as another one to be surprised at. I don't see Debenhams as having huge brand power. It failed like the other two and wasn't nearly as loved a brand as Woolworth. I'd put BHS and Debenhams on a par as far as brand goes. Neither were particularly loved and were a poor relation to some others on the high street.

I don't know where you get this idea from that Debenhams is such a loved or powerful brand and some sort of national treasure. The company certainly has a lot of history but beyond that I've not known it to be remembered fondly in the same way as Woolworth still is for example.

I don't think there will be a raise either just saying that to believe there won't be one simply because of what they said in their accounts is naive given they said the same thing in the previous year's accounts and look what happened!

If there is a raise then I think it will actually be a 'good' one as I don't think they need it to keep the lights on but maybe they do need one if they are upping spend because they really are gearing up to something tangible, big and soon.

FED, I was talking about the customers not the sellers on the MPs - how many MPs does Amazon have? BOO could end up with five or six! They'd just be cannibalising their own business to some extent.

My concern with the strategy of marketplace across the group is the law of diminishing returns. Although they don't have the same audience there will still be overlap (on both customers and products). Surely each MP adds much less value than the one before?

Not sure about the first bit either - "In Debenhams, one of the UK's best loved brands". Long way behind the likes John Lewis and M&S in the public's affection I would have thought and don't remember any great love being shown towards Debenhams at all really?

I don't claim to know better than anyone. I just don't believe in fairy tales, especially the ones told by those who fall in love with their shares and allow that love to blind them.

The market may not be perfect but the share price just reflects supply and demand - just like any other market. It doesn't need conspiracy theories to explain it.
