A few other thoughts re the 10% US import tariffs on UK goods:-

• US customers of many UK goods have already been paying import tariffs of a couple - several per cent, which should mitigate the net increase to the 10% level. I believe that a pre-existing tariff on technology hardware imports of about 2% has been the norm.

• A strengthening US dollar, which economists expect from the new US tariffs regime, should offset some/all of that 10%: by making UK goods cheaper for American buyers. As well as increasing the sterling value of Newmark's US revenues.

• A UK-US free trade deal is being negotiated, and looks to be a real possibility, in view of our relatively balanced trade and good relations.

• Newmark have, for quite some time, been exploring the establishment of a new manufacturing facility in North America, for supply chain and delivery benefits: but which which would also circumvent import tariffs.

• Grosvenor's key US partners are large companies, for whom Grosvenor's products are non-discretionary.

US President Donald Trump announced a sweeping new set of tariffs on Wednesday, arguing that they would allow the United States to economically flourish.

... 10% baseline tariff

In a background call before Trump's speech, a senior White House official told reporters that the president would impose a "baseline" tariff on all imports to the US.

That rate is set at 10% and will go into effect on 5 April.

It is the companies that bring the foreign goods into the US that have to pay the tax to the government, although this could have knock-on effects to consumers.

Some countries will only face the base rate. These include:

Custom tariffs for 'worst offenders'

White House officials also said that they would impose what they describe as specific reciprocal tariffs on roughly 60 of the "worst offenders".

These will go into effect on 9 April.

Trump's officials say these countries charge higher tariffs on US goods, impose "non-tariff" barriers to US trade or have otherwise acted in ways they feel undermine American economic goals.

The key trading partners subject to these customised tariff rates include:

European Union: 20%

China: 54% (which includes earlier tariffs) ..."

There will be winners and losers from the new US import tariffs, and Grosvenor Technology should be a strong winner.

In particular, the very high tariffs on China should sound the death knell for Grosvenor's Chinese competition in America.

Martyn's Law (Protect Duty) is clearly a major business and investment opportunity:-

So it's a huge market, and if even just a relatively small percentage of that additional £3 billion comes to Newmark, it could-should provide an enormous revenues & profits boost

And businesses should also see the logic of combining their Protect Duty obligations with more general crime prevention measures, providing a further boost.

There should be years of implementation work for Newmark ... though it won't stop there.

There will also be ongoing work for expansions, conversions, & new build.

As well as ongoing servicing and maintenance.

In addition, an excess of demand over supply could lead to non-bidding for contracts, improving success rates & margins; & perhaps also leading to referrals-partnerships between companies who can't cope with the excess work.

What will Enhanced Tier premises have to do?

The main change for premises is that they will need to have a named responsible person, who must notify the Security Industry Authority (SIA) of their details and details about the premises. The SIA are the regulator for compliance with Martyn’s Law.  

Security procedures

The responsible person is required to ensure that appropriate security procedures are in place for the venue in order to reduce harm to the public in the event of an attack.  

This involves four key areas:

• Evacuation – the process of getting people safely out of the premises.

• Invacuating – the process of bringing people safely into, or to safe parts within, the premises.

• Lockdown – the process of securing the premises to ensure that the entry of any attacker is restricted or prevented e.g. locking doors, closing shutters or using barriers.

• Communication – the process of alerting people on the premises to move them away from any danger.

Public protection measures

In addition, they must also consider public protection measures, designed to mitigate risk of harm or risk of a security threat taking place, and to provide greater public protection against acts of terrorism. The four types of measures are:

• Measures in relation to monitoring the premises or event, and their immediate vicinity.

• Measures in relation to controlling the movement of individuals into, out of and within the premises or event.

• Measures in relation to the physical safety and security of the premises or event.

• Measures in relation to the security of information which may assist in the planning, preparation or execution of acts of terrorism.

Each venue and responsible person will need to consider what they need to put in place in order to have compliant public protection measures.

These measures could be implemented through people, process or physical measures. This would include, for example, CCTV operation, security checks and equipment, safeguarding policies and procedures and any other number of measures. ..."
