Tyche, you're bang on right with your c 500ms latency real-world figure. That's unavoidable in real-world terms. And my point is that, although satellite used to be acceptable for W. European backhaul provision, I strongly doubt it is now.

Even with all the smartest packet prioritisation in the world, building in a buffered delay to the voice stream, accelerating TCP to the max, caching via local PEP servers for 4G usage or whatever, I don't believe that it's going to be acceptable to the MNOs or their users in any developed first world market - well, certainly not in W. Europe.

AVN needs to focus on more appropriate markets, like Africa, the Middle East and maybe the old Eastern Bloc.

Again, I just don't get this. Sure, I get how satellite can be deployed quickly almost literally anywhere in the UK to offer some level of backhaul to more remote MNO masts. That's the obvious and easy bit.

But how can the latency problem be got around? Even supposing zero lag in literally all parts of the network, on satellite broadband, you've still got an absolute minimum 200ms round trip latency as defined by the laws of physics (and in the real world, satellite broadband latency tends to run at more than double that).

I've no idea how such latency would ever be acceptable in the world of 4G and mobile voice?

EE would be far better off looking at fixed wireless access (FWA) hops from fibre-backhauled points of presence. These days it's both cost-effective and technically easy enough to beam Gbps speeds via radio link across ten or more kilometres.

Hylas 4 is in orbital position already - the question surrounding it is simply, can AVN pay the final tens of millions of dollars of contractually pre-agreed payment for it that's falling due very shortly.

Hylas 3 is the one that's been repeatedly delayed.

Al, whereas I agree with your prognosis for AVN pretty much entirely, I think you've got that debt figure wrong.

The recent "agree or we're dead anyway" D4E swap that the bondholders had no choice but to accept converted around $570m of debt into equity.

Still leaves AVN with an unsupportable c. $500m of debt on bonds that they didn't get converted to equity though, plus any other smaller levels of borrowing it may have - and looking at all historic revenue performance so far, the company hasn't got a cat in hell's chance of ever being able to get out from under that still massive millstone, albeit that its weight has been recently halved.
