Announces Five-Year Partnership Extension Through June 2029

Overland Park, KS – On the heels of a successful school start-up with Blue Valley Schools, Durham School Services (DSS) has announced its partnership renewal with the school district. The five-year extension will run through June 2029.

Durham and the Blue Valley School District have been partners for over a decade. As part of Durham’s community outreach program, Partners Beyond the Bus, the team has been involved with the community through various events such as donations to local pantries and sponsorships. Most notably, the team has sponsored the Blue Valley Educational Foundation’s (BVEF) Annual Community Breakfast event for several years, as well as supported grants for teachers as part of the BVEF’s annual day of giving. Durham’s BVEF sponsorships specifically contribute to mental health and wellness training and support for students, staff, and parents.

“With the recent contract extension, Blue Valley looks forward to continuing our work with Durham to address challenges and improve transportation services,” said Jason Gillam, Director of Business Operations, Blue Valley Schools. “Despite the national bus driver shortage, Durham has worked hard to enhance service for Blue Valley families, and together, we will continue to foster a culture that attracts and retains dedicated staff who make a difference in the lives of our students.”

Calgary, AB – Stock Transportation is off to a great start and school year with its partner, the Calgary Catholic School District (CCSD). The school district’s first week of the new school year ended on an overall positive note, with students getting to and from school safely thanks to the tireless work and efforts of Stock Transportation’s team members.

Back in April, Stock Transportation and CCSD announced their newly forged five-year partnership, which includes a total of 80 routes. In addition to Calgary, Stock Transportation also provides student transportation in Edmonton, where it first started providing services in 2011, and all across Ontario, which dates back to 1958.

Meridian, ID – West Ada School District celebrated a successful school start-up with its new partner Durham School Services (DSS) and recently sang its praises of both Durham and the school district’s own transportation department during an informal staff meeting. The school district plans to formally recognize and thank both teams for the successful school start-up during their school board meeting on November 11, 2024. The board meeting is open to the public and local media are welcome to attend.

The partnership between West Ada School District and DSS, which was announced back in February, will run for the next five years. It consists of 200 routes and is noteworthy due to the district being the largest in the state of Idaho.

“As we kick off another school year, I’m proud to say that student transportation has been smooth and effective, thanks to our strong partnership with Durham School Services,” said Dr. Dave Reinhart, Chief Operations Office, West Ada School District. “Together, we work as a team to ensure that our students and their families receive the highest level of service. Councils are generally useless. They are useless in the public sector and inefficient. Imagine when they start overseeing commercial operations!!

Failures in service will be on their shoulders. Hence, I'd be shocked if they don't opt for the support and expertise of larger operators with proper larger management teams.

The key thing here is the operators need to ensure that are going in with pricing and terms that justify the work and risks involved.

Working on a 3% margin with potential penalties and poor payment terms does not work. The capital would be better utilised elsewhere.

Hopefully the larger companies do talk with each other and the early experiences of those already franchised will assist them!

The operator says that increased rates on new services that would help negate any losses experienced on expiring contracts has not been possible. “TfL has also failed to provide us with any meaningful feedback on tenders submitted,” Dean said in the announcement of the cessation of its contracts.

He has tried to get some explanation on why his operation was not winning the tenders: “At a meeting with TfL’s Tom Cunnington on 5 June, we pointed out our lack of success in tendering. He stated that our small business model gave rise to concerns at TfL as they felt that small managerial teams (we have three people who dealt with TfL) were insufficient to meet TfL’s needs. He pointed out smaller teams resulted in delays in responses.

“Since Covid, there has been a noticeable increase in the number of meetings (for various purposes) organised by TfL. Whereas I accept the value of these meetings, you could in theory make a career out of attending meetings, getting involved in projects and so on. This is OK for the bigger groups who could allocate a number of different staff members to attend these events and thus spread the load. But I feel that TfL assume that if you can’t attend, that indicates that you’re not interested in the subject in hand. As a small player we had fairly little influence at these meetings, so we were selective in those meetings we attended.

“Notwithstanding Mr Cunnington’s comments, I do feel that the TfL environment is heavily focused towards the larger players.”

I suspect the authorities are as frustrated as anyone as production will be continually declining without ongoing investment. Is this the time that seplat are being asked to take a reduced % of the assets and Seplat are holding firm? I hope so! Does anyone have any idea how long it will take to start maximimising the assets again after a couple of years of low investment?
