Rolls-Royce has said that its plans to cut thousands of jobs in Derby will “gain further momentum” this year as it looks to restructure and reduce costs. The company said that it planned to cut 1,000 jobs at Derby in 2018, another 1,000 in 2019 and a further 1,000 by mid-2020. On a more positive note, Rolls-Royce’s first Trent 1000 engine is set to return to service, the Derby firm says it has taken a £554m hit trying to correct the engine problems at Delta TechOps’ engine overhaul facility in Atlanta, Georgia.

Get any bad news out now and in the next few weeks. Blame it all on Brexit. That will be the pattern for a lot of UK stocks until the 29th March as BODs expose all the skeletons in their cupboards while the market is already depressed. Closures, redundancies etc etc etc. It will all come out now.

No panic here and in the present bear market this is the new normal. Happy to hold and reinvest the dividend, which is now my default position with the whole portfolio. Each year I now passively pump in some £10K+ in the form of auto dividend reinvestments, while building up a cash pile elsewhere. No need to worry for at least another 10years +.

Don't get carried away just yet. The rise to £40 was way overdone and back in the days when shares only seemed to go up. Those days are long over, so any future growth here is likely to be more modest. Truth is they were probably way overbought at £38+ and then correspondingly oversold when they fell back to the low £20's. The true value as usual is probably somewhere in the middle.

The UK registry took a another big hit on Tuesday as P&O announced the re-flag of the rest of its cross channel fleet to Cyprus ahead of Brexit. The move was announced as "preserving the tax tonnage arrangements whereby ships should remain flagged in an EU member state"

Not at all I have no beef with the fact that he is wealthy and most of his cash was inherited anyway. It is the hypocrisy of the man that I cannot stand in regard of Brexit. It is easy for him to espouse the idea that he is supporting the common man in wanting out of the EU. In truth for people like him it will make no difference financially whatsoever whether we are in or out. His gravy train is always going to run on time. However, the poor sap working on the production lines at JLR, Toyota, Nissan, Honda and Vauxhall (to name but a few) will be the ones who potentially will bear the brunt of any recession.

The only person ever to talk sense in the presence of that T**T Piers Morgan was Danny Dyer and anything that JR-M has to say is certainly not worth listening to coming from a partner in Somerset Capital management (managed via subsidiaries in the tax havens of the Cayman Islands and Singapore). Oh yes JR-M is a great defender of Tax Havens (read Tax Avoidance) and despite his strident views on Brexit, Somerset Capital recently opened an investment fund in Dublin. A prospectus for the new business listed Brexit as one of the risks, as it could cause "considerable uncertainty". Of course JR-M always states that he has no part in these decisions. My arse he does, how else can he justify his huge income from same?

You are correct I do not own a business, but forgive me if I do not cry too much for your pain. My experience of those who do own businesses is that they are extremely adept at bypassing many of the taxes that I have to pay without question. They do this by using a variety of legal means (paying dividends in lieu of salary for instance), making eye wateringly large contributions to their personal pension schemes (which they are now able to access well before retirement age) and putting just about everything they pay out down on the balance sheet as a legitimate business "expense".

Could not agree more with Skier1. The other dying ducks will be the retail banks with their antiquated inefficient and incompatible IT systems and bricks and mortar branches. Revolut and its ilk will be the banking giants of the future and not anything linked to the high street.
