Sinopec has connected its first geothermal power production project to China’s national grid. Sinopec Star Co., Ltd., its clean energy subsidiary, manages the deep geothermal pilot in Xianyang, Shaanxi Province, marking Sinopec’s entry into geothermal electricity generation.

This is the first project in China to combine geothermal power production with helium extraction. It aims to maximize the use of geothermal resources while producing helium, a crucial industrial gas for aerospace, healthcare, and scientific research sectors. Sinopec intends to boost clean energy output and reduce China’s reliance on helium imports.

Located in the Guanzhong region, the site sits atop rich geothermal resources. Sinopec drilled 3,000 meters deep at Baoshi Jiayuan, where the water temperature reaches 102°C. The well provides heating and electricity. During the heating season, the geothermal water heats 120,000 square meters. When not heating, the plant generates 700,000 kWh of electricity annually and extracts helium.

Helium extraction forms a vital aspect of this project. As a large helium consumer, China has long relied on imports to meet demand. Sinopec’s project seeks to address this by enabling domestic helium production. Engineers identified wells in the Weihe Basin with high helium concentrations. Sinopec uses advanced membrane separation and pressure-variable adsorption technologies to extract helium with 99.99% purity, paving the way for large-scale helium production from geothermal water.

Seriously, I think HE1 may have offered Blue Star an inducement to wait until Rukwa is in motion, or even an offer to buy them out at a price they can’t refuse, once the ink is dry on the outstanding documents in Tanzania!

Imagine the scenario if Sinopec come along and offer to chip in with cash to buy 32% of Songwe Helium Limited?

They have all the cash we need, the plant prototype for separating the helium, the market to sell it into, and access to what will most likely be the most sustainable long term Helium supply in the World - 30 years +

And HE1 retains 51% of that - I’m up for that 👌💰💰💰

Well, Blue Star didn’t turn my theory on its head with a spectacular ASX new release last night stating the plant was built and the pipework laid, ready to open the Valves!

Once Rukwa gets the Green lights and is “open for business “ then Colorado will move up a few gears as well!

Being having a long hard think about the long stated goals of both Blue Star and HE1 to get into production in H1/2025 at Galactica after the successful conclusion of the 6 drills!

As stated in their respective News releases on the subject, Blue Star announced a new target of H2/2025, and HE1 opted for Q4/2025 for first production and revenues!

I now think that HE1 put the brakes on, to conserve the allocated cash on the balance sheet due to the longer than anticipated full award of the ML, and avoid possible embarrassment of looking for needed cash if the ML delay turned out more lengthy than they hoped it was going to be!

Once the Rukwa house is in order the cash issue would be gone, and they could go back to Blue Star and tell them to crack on!

Just my thoughts, but it does seem very plausible!

Anyway, tomorrow may enlighten us further!

The China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation (Sinopec) has announced that their first geothermal power demonstration project has obtained the access permit to start supplying power to the power grid in Xianyang City in Shaanxi Province, China. The facility is an integrated power, heat, and helium extraction plant.

The project is described as a low-temperature power generation project, drawing thermal water from a 3000-meter deep well with a wellhead temperature of about 102 °C. This is typical in the medium-low enthalpy sedimentary basin-type geothermal field of the Guanzhong region.

During the heating season, geothermal is utilized for low-load power generation, which cascades down to heating by heat exchange. When heating is not needed, the project generates electricity at full load. The combined heat and power plant is described to have a heating capacity of 170,000 square meters and an annual power generation capacity of about 700,000 kWh.

The facility also serves as a demonstration project for helium extraction. Analysis of the thermal waters in this region indicated that the helium content of most geothermal wells was exceptionally high compared to both local and international averages.

In recent years, Sinopec has continued to carry out water-soluble helium separation and purification experiments and key technology research in Xianyang City, and has successfully applied it to this project. Through membrane separation and pressure swing adsorption coupling process, helium with a purity of more than 99% has been obtained, providing valuable technical experience for the further industrialization of geothermal water-soluble helium.

Sinopec continues to deepen its geothermal field and has become the largest geothermal energy development and utilization company in China. Although China is currently the world leader in geothermal heating capacity, its geothermal power generation sector is still at the development stage. As of the end of 2022, the geothermal power generation of China is at 53.45 MW.
