RE: QE Tapering20 Aug 2013 11:33
I think that many companies have cut costs and reduced staff which flatters the top line. There will always be a balance between cutting and cutting too far. See Tesco! I have not noticed any poor customer service but then again I dont deal with SL. on a regular basis so will bow to your superior knowledge on this.
As for Pensions, I personally think that auto enrollment is a good idea as too many people zombie into situations and then realise its too late that it is too late to make a difference. Most people on these boards are at least thinking about there financial future and trying to better themselves, even if investing doesn't work for them.
The auto enrollment gets them started and hopefully will allow them to question there own financial state and then question if it is best for them. Then they can decide. Better to have something than nothing though or do you want most of the country living of the state? I'm not saying that pensions are necessary the best thing to do. ISA v Pension or Property v Pension we could debate until the cows come home.
At least if you have something its a start and hopefully your employer might top up too. You get used to having a slightly lower income, cos your saving! Yyou can also opt out if you can get better numbers via other options, plus you have considered an investment case. If you opt out you, make a conscious decision to do so, so dont come back moaning that you dont have anything in old age when everybody else has more than you.
Maybe Im a bit more "old fashioned" thinking that you should get the benefit of doing the right thing by saving and allowing those that dont to suffer the consequences of there own actions. The Army used to take a percentage of recruits pay and auto save this for them as the boys would go a bit mad with there firsts pay packets. As they got a bit older they realised the benefit of saving and were coached by the older members of staff. This stopped, human rights, not qualified financial advisers etc. Today there are lots of soldiers who cant afford their daily meals and the army had to bring in a system for them to get loans to eat. So much for allowing people to make there own decisions! It sound good but you need to be informed and encouraged.
The latest scheme is called "Pay as you dine" or colloquially know as "Pay as you starve!"
