[SXX] Next to oil, potash could be the next big thing for western North Dakota, and lawmakers are taking a look at how to tax it. Used as a fertilizer mainly in Asia, the salt deposits can be found here in Burke, Divide, Renville and Bottineau counties. Director of Mineral Resources, Lynn Helms, says potash needs to be recovered and processed to have any value. Helms estimates that 20 Billion tons of potash can be recovered in North Dakota at today's price that would be worth between 6 and 15 Trillion dollars. He says North Dakota has the potential to be the 3rd top potash producer in the WORLD. Dakota Salts has already started exploring potential deposits. Helms says they have drilled one well and the results look promising... (Lynn Helms) "They plan to drill two more before the rig leaves the state so they can outline some 50,000 acres they think is prospective in southern Burke County. They plan to have a pilot mining well in operation within two years and then in 3-5 years be in full scale mining." Plans also include a potash processing facility to be built in Burke County employing 100 people. The proposed bill would exempt potash processing plants from taxation however many people spoke in opposition to that idea. The bill also proposes to tax potash production at 4 percent with 20 percent going to local governments and 80% to the state. Lawmakers and residents from northwest North Dakota say local governments should get a bigger cut of the tax revenue
