Yes this conversation about buy backs is getting almost as tedious as DCB blaming every ill in the world on Brexit. A simple £1bn divided by a Market Cap today of £45bn means the share price should appreciate by about 2.2% at today’s price. However, if only a third of the £1bn has been used this far, the share price must be about 0.75% higher than it ordinarily would have been. 0.75% of circa 65p is about 1/2p. So upto now, the share price since the buy back started is about 1/2p than it would have been without the buy back. Crude figs but I’m not far off. This debate is over a piddling amount to be honest.

I’ll start buying more if these reach 61p. Sadly the Italian mess will impact on bank shares despite the fingers in the ears protestations by DCB this morning. A lot of the French banks have dropped as they are exposed to Italian debt. Deutche Bank is evidently in trouble. Only 2 of the Italian banks have Texas Ratios of under 100 with the remainder being effectively insolvent. Monte Dei Paschi received a bailout last year. Lloyds hopefully has zero exposure but trust in the whole banking system will inevitably come under scrutiny holding down prices for a while.

Yes, looks like a lot of papering over the cracks to me. I expect if the ECB is buying up the debt at inflated yields, it's to keep them in the EU. Another general election might blast all that out of the water.

Calm before the storm. The Italy debt thing needs to be dealt with at some point. Most of the Italian banks are effectively finished given their non-performing loans exposure. It’s going to be a question of who bails them out. The crisis in Italy is not going away. Some speculation is that Italy will beat us out of the EU. That’ll be a tough one for DCB and JF to swallow lol.

Looks like we might be down a bit. 4% down on US market last night so we might have a bit of a drop again. This Italian stuff might weigh on the banks for a good while yet....

I wouldn’t read too much into buy/sell volumes on here Asperger1. The SETS auction showed as a buy yesterday (can be booked as a sell) and there were a number of inter market-maker transfers booked as buys (have to be booked as one or the other). The buy and sell volume split on here is meaningless and misleading.

They may well be if Italy tanks spreading contagion. At the AGM last year, it was agreed that upto 7.15bn shares could be bought back. That leaves the option open for more buybacks in the future as at current prices only about 1.5bn shares are going to be cancelled this time round.

Higher overall volumes Snige such as todays will mean more are bought back subject to the daily percentage maximum (was it 10% ? Cant remember). UBS will run 2 books more than likely - one for normal business and one for buybacks. How they allocate sales between their 2 books will be something we won’t be privy to.

I’m not with you Snige. The daily volume ? A lot of trades go through after the bell at 4.30 including the SETS auction volume at 16.35 every day. Not sure what you’re getting at.....

You’re suggesting UBS should take a gamble on the way the share price is going to move. It might not continue to slide. UBS’s job is to buy shares that PIs and institutions are selling. It’s not to speculate on which way the price is going to move.
