I beg to differ. Thomas Cook holidays are IATA protected for a start. The company has no funding issues this summer. The company no doubt will discount holidays to get a sale so there will be bargains to be had. I would have thought there was never a better time to take a Thomas Cook holiday.

At some point, this share will accelerate northwards and some will appreciate that shares move up and down daily for reasons unrelated to buybacks. 4% will have been repurchased when this buyback is over roughly. Another 6% allowed I believe.

The sale of the airlines assumes the books have not been cooked to portray the airlines as being profitable so they can be sold. What gets charged for seats between tour operator and integral airline is anyone’s guess and is not public knowledge.

The goodwill write-off today is no doubt at the insistence of the auditors.

Additional Listings for share schemes and buybacks are unrelated. If special dividends were being paid instead of buybacks, share dilution would continue due to additional listings. Amuses me seeing the number of people who still can’t get their heads around this.

I’m ambivalent as to whether excess capital is distributed by special dividend or buyback Wids but I take your point.

A combination of dividend growth and capital growth is what most shareholders aspire to I would guess.

I guess it depends a bit on how you seeing the short term economic future going. There is very little wriggle room for interest rate cuts here and in Europe if a global recession is coming. The US does have a small margin. I personally don’t think there will be a downturn imminently.

I do have empathy for frustrated shareholders. I have held these shares for a long time too. Lloyd’s woes asides PPI were predominantly the result of the disastrous acquisition of HBOS and its toxic mortgage book. Lloyd’s have undoubtedly been punished and have had to take their medicine more than most. I am optimistic however going forward.

Whether this buyback Wids is conducted in the 50s, 60s or 70s makes very little material difference. The result is 2 or 3p a share depending on whether the shares are bought at 70p or 50p. I can’t get too excited about it.

I personally find your figures useful Asperger and certainly more rewarding than reading the apparent merits of Jeremy Corbyn. If some can’t understand the figures and their relevance, maybe they shouldn’t be investing in stocks.
