Oakleaf, in my opinion, ease of use , plus lack of side-effects is something the Americans in particular will like. I can see it appealing to Dr's treating a high percentage of the population who are already on medication due to existing conditions. Truth be told, America is an over-medicated society. Anything that eliminates, or lowers drug interactions will be welcomed IMO. I don't know what the data is on that point but I imagine(?) it's good compared to other drugs as SNG works as we know 'with' the body etc.

The country’s Health Ministry reported that three Covid-19 patients in Oman have become infected with mucormycosis, a life-threatening condition commonly known as “black fungus,” which has spread quickly among virus patients in India. It was not immediately clear what condition the three patients were in.
Although the disease remains relatively rare, its sudden increase has stirred fears among doctors and health officials struggling to combat Covid-19 surges around the world.
Omani doctors warned earlier this week that the sultanate faces an acute shortage of beds amid the proliferation of highly transmissible coronavirus variants, a sputtering vaccine rollout and relaxed movement restrictions.
That medical workers complained about the dire shortfalls on state TV underscored the extent of the health crisis in Oman, where media is tightly controlled. Omani authorities said the infectious delta variant, first detected in India, is coursing through the Gulf Arab state.
Oman’s cases have more than tripled in the past month, with authorities recording over 2,000 new cases and 33 deaths today."

Very good point Matml. 10% will overwhelm any health system, vaccines alone will never be enough.

Phase 2 trials typically take anything up to 2 years in the real world, without a raging pandemic, shortage of resources, stressed out tired hospital staff dressed in sweaty PPE. Contextually, 4 months is not a long time.

That is a very worrying stat Doc (12 of 42 had been double jabbed).

What is very frustrating is the conflicting data being floated in the media. E.g today I read that having two vaccinations slashes the chances of getting Covid to just one in 22,500. That's according to the ZOE study (Kings College) based on data gathered from more than a million users of the ZOE Covid Symptom Study app. And yet, the hospitalisation rate of vaccinated people who contracted the Indian variant makes no sense, if that ZOE data is to be believed. I must say it is baffling.

Quieter hospitals are not a sign that there is no wave coming - it is in fact proof that surge planning is effective, active and in place - since January hospitals have been again redeploying staff to critical care and standing down elective surgery in a bid to avoid being overwhelmed by a third wave of Covid cases. Cancer patients and many many others who desperately need treatment are are affected by this. Hence wards cleared out, visitor numbers low. Please don't view quiet hospitals as a sign that Covid is no threat - the opposite is actually true. And the saddest thing is cancer patients and the like are having to shoulder the heaviest burden by having treatments stopped and diagnosis delayed. Something to consider in any moment of vaccination hesitancy. Those people are paying with their lives too.

Just a quick update on a friend (fit as a fiddle, early 40's) who got Covid back in March 2020. He was hospitalised for breathing but made a good recovery - except for tinnitus (ringing in the ears, a horrible thing to live with) which he developed as a result of the infection and may be longterm if not for life...tbd. It seem innocuous but affects all aspects of his life including his career. He is taking part in some study with ICL (I think, or another large London study) on long-Covid. I know there are some that still are not convinced of the wretched and seeming random after-effects of this disease - age and good health are not a magic shield shield, anyone can end up with life-altering after effects - all I can do is hope someone reads this and decides to err on the side of caution to protect themselves, be it via vaccination or SD etc. It's just not worth being the one whose immune system throws a wobbly. GLA.

The government plans to launch a call for tenders for so-called pandemic preparedness contracts with a five-year term so that vaccine doses “can be activated quickly if the worst comes to the worst,” Spahn told a news conference. Manufacturing setbacks and an over-reliance on EU approval for supplies slowed Germany’s rollout of Covid vaccines. It wants to boost domestic production to ensure it is not deprived of shots in future pandemics, Reuters reports. The stand-by contracts will help maintain know-how acquired during the pandemic so that next time “we don’t have to ramp up production from zero to 100,” Christoph Krupp, head of the vaccine production task force told reporters. “We want to bet on several companies and several vaccine types and not just one,” Krupp added.

Even though it's about vaccines, therapeutics will also be needed to ensure no manufactuing log-jams in the future. So it's no longer a talked about thing - the stockpiling process is underway. Good news all round.
