I think the old model of buying in and squeezing suppliers do not work with EV.They have realised that vertical integration is only way.They are releasing cars in 2020 that is not competitive now never mind in 2years time.

Dyson looked at solid state batteries but timeframe was wrong.Realistically not ready until 2025 and very risky .From lab to manufacturing takes huge resources and not always a smooth road any delay and he would be out off it.So back to the lithium that is tried and tested.Shows how dominant present tech is.The only one with the required energy density.

That interesting because elon musk has said the gigafactory will increase production fro 35GW/hrs to 103Gw/hrs where is the lithium coming from?????

Car makers in EU got a fundamental problem of cost.Car makers are using cheaper batteries packs that are just adequate.This causes overheating problems and shorter pack life.But to change to the cylindrical type packs means a loss of between$10000/$20000 per car.The only way to beat this is to bring the whole process inhouse.This is what TESLA did and this is why their packs has about 25% more energy density and better performance.Car makers are reluctant to invest instead of the tried and tested route of squeeze the suppliers.This is not working as eu not competative with tesla or asia.When the penny drops it is going to be very interesting as car makers race to secure supply and we may be right in the middle of this interesting times ahead.The only other scenario is to sell electric cars as loss leaders and hope for the best???

So they need to vertically intergrate battery production and have a close supply I wonder how they will achieve that?

Just saw a vid on new Mercedes beautiful car but the battery spec is rubbish.Looks like they are putting anything out there to frustrate TESLA.Due to launch in 2020 only supporting battery for 3 years?????

At the moment manufacturers are just delaying delivary of EVs.Just how long does that last.All spare capacity being used up .Tesla is at 20GW/Hrs at giga 1 ,and going for exspansion.When semi truck hits the road demand will treble????

HA HA Tesla semi truck has crossed america with its semi truck using the tesla supercharger network they put an extension cord to use 3 bays at time putting to bed the range issue tesla has thousands of these on preorder this could be the most disruptive vehical to date.Think of all the lith thats going to suck up.

The waiting list for electric cars is increasing because of shortage of off the shelf battery solutions.Car makers in a bind and are trying to fob off customers with fossil fuel cars.So looks like at some point manufacturers has to bite the vertical integration bullet and start investing heavily.I think the strategy is to wait and hope electric cars just fade away so they can get back to making money and slowly choking their customers to death?????
