Morning Fender, that's interesting, I was going ask what your plan was for those you bought in Jan, you've got your 5% in a couple of weeks so was expecting to hear you'd sold at 390 not bought more.

Personally I'm torn, although I feel we should already be over £4 the recent dip and the fact we're spiking in February makes me wonder if we may see a slight retrace, so had considered reducing. The only things holding me back are our recent food sales in comparison to the market and the fact shorts keep increasing, now at the highest in five years, yet the SP is up 20% in the same timeframe.

Carrington, in your opinion when do you see shorts reducing and as I see it they have two options, buy to cover or use their longs, but on that last option surely if they feel it's time to reduce a short you'd not want to reduce your long but increase? Short squeeze due?

UK grocery sales rose in January while inflation eased, according to new data from Wordpanel by Numerator on Tuesday, as own label spending climbed to a record level as customers looked to manage their budgets.

UK grocery sales rose 3.6% year-on-year to GBP37.69 billion in the 12 weeks to January 25, 2026, while take-home sales across the four weeks to the same date were 3.8% higher.

Grocery price inflation eased back to 4.0%, the lowest level since April last year, from 4.3% in December.

Own label spending accounted for 52% of grocery spending, the highest level ever recorded.

"For most shoppers, January is all about resetting household budgets, and this year was no exception. While grocery sales continue to grow and inflation eased to its lowest level in months, value remained front of mind for many – with own label hitting a record high, accounting for more than half of all grocery spend," said Fraser McKevitt, head of retail and consumer insight at Worldpanel by Numerator.

Sales at Ocado Retail, the joint venture between Ocado PLC and Marks & Spencer Group PLC, increased by 14%, while the market share rose to 2.1% from 1.9% a year ago.

Sales of grocery items at Marks & Spencer were 6.9% higher over the 12 week period.

Not too shabby, has the wind changed and will the recent shorts reduce, increasing the wind speed?

Where is everyone, 3rd of Feb, only just finished the turkey! Not alot to discuss since update, shorts have increased yet again but the SP hasn't flinched in fact higher. Staff share will be interesting, all will know / expect the SP to be higher come May like us so I'd imagine most will wait.

Shame we've also seen an unexpected increase in shorts, it's not even summer.

They're trying but it's not working, highest shorts have been in 5 years other than Oct 2022 when the SP was a quarter of what was are now, looking forward to the spring.

Now Trump has dropped his threat of tariffs and invading Greenland we should see a blue day, question is will we be able to believe another thing he says, oh wait a minute...

Sorry Caron, not sure how it's BS, he said what he did, could have made more but could have also slipped back, profit is profit.

We get an edit function and I'll go back and make sure all my predictions were correct and point it out repeatedly!

Accept a few typos, better than the alternative.

Nothing wrong with Aldi or Lidl, some quality products at good prices, anyone who says otherwise typically hasn't been, is a snob or just an obnoxious weasel twerp, some times all three apply.

Option 2.

It's highly unlikely that all shorts will be closed completely and on the same day, most likely shorts will be reduced gradually and probably to just below reporting levels, in that case we're only talking about 0.7% of shares, about 15m, only slightly overbought a typical days volume. We are up 10% in a short period so may drop back slightly as people take profit. In previous years Jan to March are quiet with people taking profit or simply selling in anticipation of a drop before coming back in the Spring. So the selling pressure potential could allow shorts to exit and the SP still falls, as we saw last time Marshallwace reduced.

Food for thought, I prefer option 1 😃 but I suspect option 2 is most likely 😒

Dave two options for you if shorts do reduce, let's see which you prefer.

Option 1, as they start others follow suit not only that but they use the opportunity to increase their longs, the SP reacts, that combine with the notification of closed shorts, and us already being up 10% this year spurs others in to a Time to Buy, short squeeze occurs and we see a repeat of last April where we went a lower level to over £4 in a matter of weeks. No reason by the end of the month we could be back to where we were early November.

Oh percy, there you go again, I'd prefer it if you kept to the company rather than personal attacks, but if you are going to get personal atlest be correct, Carrington posts both buys and sells and it's there for all to see. In fact theres a lot of value to Carringtons posts beyond company specific but giving newbies a flavour of trading styles, core holding and trade a %, never any mention of holding or trade value or bragging.

You did also post...As I say, there will be a starvation of news up to fy numbers, the share price will fall. I dont disagree with that, would say SP WILL fall, it MAY, but the next bit. Do your own due diligence and research previous year’s patterns. I always do, typically the SP climbs in Christmas update and falls afterwards, it's not done that this year, the reverse infact, so what do you read in to that?

Results slightly better than expected, especially for those who thought administrators were about to be called 🤣. Food up again, clothing down in part a drag from the attack and part project fear for the budget and in general, funny that my utilities are down over the last twelve months as are clothing prices and food has stabilised with some exceptions.

So with nothing startling to see where will sp go? Drift until FY results, can't see a significant rise without a short squeeze, equally don't see the usual dip through Jan to March, I do see the days getting longer, think I'll hibernate for a little longer.

Where should I start?

It is curious that we haven't seen the usual rally in to update especially with the low SP, how bad will results have to be to warrant a further fall? I feel this is more driven by market factors than fundementals, suspect this could be a rought ride until the spring without a good update and positive and realistic forward look.

I'm going to hold tight rather than run for the hills.
