The Thought Worth Floating10 Feb 2021 11:43
Historically UK has been brilliant on the science and lousy on the commercialisation or building world class bio/tech/IT businesses. Why? Well Dyson could see if he had floated he would have been snapped up , as the UK fund management industry, pension funds etc are far too short term, and too much pressure is applied to management to make next years earning forecasts etc....plus the pool of capital for these businesses is actually very shallow (look at the role that Scottish Mortgage has had to play,, or 3i and the other big PE firms...Woodford tried to do it but disastrously so for reasons to do with his god complex).
The reason why Dyson resisted IPO or JIm Ratcliffe is that they both know that the UK stock market is antithetical to long term growth and planning. Too much obsession with dividends, immediate profitability and pleasing s/holders. if Dyson had floated , that business would have been gone by now, snapped up for its IP. IN the US, au contraire, the likes of Amazon, Google, and now Tesla have been backed to the hilt without making a dime in profits for Amazon for ages and Tesla likewise. Unless Newlands has anchor s/holders prepped to take long term view i.e. more than 2 years, then this business does not achieve its potential. That only happens imo if the shareholder register changes with US funds coming on board. Other wise it is good night vienna toanother British success
