Yes Owl just checked RNS. Not quite 400m Shares then. It just goes to show that when the SP rises, this can really negatively effect that Average ie Actual Shares cancelled. With the SP being above £4 I would doubt if the BoD continue with a New Buyback.

Going back to my earlier point / it would make sense to use some (less than 1m ?) of those 331m Shares to fulfill Shareshave scheme (As they’ve already purchased them) but I guess whatever the rules and Tax implications are ie : Can only be earmarked for original purpose of Cancellation / then it is what it is.

Roll on April to see what new plans are.

£1.4 billion worth of Shares equates to about 400 to 600 million shares cancelled ? (Taking in to account rising prices). That’s a sizeable chunk.

As the SP rises so does the buyback become less effective re shareholder value and at some point an inflection point is reached where by dividend focus becomes increasingly effective in comparison. In the BoD I trust. They are getting the balance right imho.

Thank you for your thoughts Owl85. One would think the Company would not quite cancel all of their bought back shares and save some for the Annual Sharesave scheme which comes up every April ? Surely the Sharecount will go up every year because of this ? If only slightly in comparison to the Buyback…

Once this 1.4billion Share buyback has completely ceased, it will be interesting to see what the Directors plans are to maximise Value back to Shareholders ? We are finally approaching a low inflation economy predicted 2026.

It says 10 to 15% of Share Capital in any 12 Month period for a plc. But surely there must be a bottom line that you cannot exceed ?

Best possible News this. Didn’t see it coming. Even better than increasing Divi dare I say. Does anyone know if they can simply continue doing Buyback until in theory just 1 Share left or is there a legal limit ?

Agreed Owl. But in Theory. The SP goes higher. People Sell and take their healthy profit. Divi goes up and there are less individual Shareholders in number so the Shares are now held by more prudent long term Shareholders who will not Sell due to the Divi Factor. Thus raising the SP in the exclusion of the Buy Back. IMO it’s the only way to go. See if I’m right when time comes.

One thing is clear. There is headroom in the Economics to introduce a growing Divi.

When the Buy back stops End of Q1 I am hoping Tesco have a plan to raise dividend to soften the blow.
