Alfa.. I kind of thought tge thermodynamics was what you had in mind... but renewables are very lossy as we... wind has an efficiency on average of less than 15% so does solar.. there is the dc-dc and dc-ac losses along with veh ev battery conversion losses.. .. but I rather hope that coal.is done for and gas will reduce as renewable and storage builds (more localised I hope).. .. wonder where all that storage will come from ;-)

Alfa .. Got some data to back that up as everyone I have spoken to in the past few moths at National Grid says energy usage will go up. What inefficient primary sources ?

Well RK. Point taken, but perhaps an occasional bit of balance. Its all very well banging the drum for storage, but the point was raised about EV's ... and since BE's offering will be a key element of the storage market and its use. Perhaps a bit of wider balance that it is not the sole answer on its own. Part of the of repeated maxim about levelised cost assumes tax rates do not change. They will change. They will significantly increase for the very reason I point out.

The more subtle point, is how to distinguish tax rates for particular use.... there is no possibility than any government will just average it on all after all, those who do not drive would be penalised and the howls of 'not progressive' will echo.

It would be fairly simple to tax based on mileage - veh's get an MOT and even if that was foregone for the 1st 3 years as now it would be simple to have to register mileage (a bit like online reporting of home power use).

Again, the subtle point is the relative tax rate would be very high (remember .. 85%ish of current spend is tax) so the economics of EV then change.

not seen that site Alfa thanks .... just a small point about the cost (2p) they seem to use ,.... as EV expands, fuel tax take will reduce (by Billions) and that will inevitability be lumped onto electric charging EV's. the only was I see to separate home vs car electrons will be a charge per mile recorded.

Remember, 85% (approx) of what we pay at a forecourt goes to the government in one tax, duty or other. I might have remembered the wrong number but I think it is around 35-39B ... a lot of tax to give up

Well RK .. as one who retired from the Automotive industry.. you are right.. they are all scrambling to put fire hazzard Lithium-Ion all over the shop, but I am afraid I feel you are incorrect to say "In the end, the need for power demand will be met with grid balancing and energy storage and renewables as part of a multifaceted approach. While storage is a necessary area of development with a wider distribution of renewable, load balancing is not the problem... distribution capacity is... that needs wires that are not there.

The average home is powered with a 100A (max) capacity wire (25kw). every 3rd house is generally on the same phase (the network being 3-phase). The whole system is predicated on the balance of the phases being pretty well aligned. Suddenly having every other house try and draw 25KW to charge a car is not possible - the distribution to the end homes is not designed for sustained high power transfer.

No amount of 'desire' to do it will get over the physics of it. Large scale adoption of EV requires a substantial infrastructure development and something akin to charger farms sited by substations. There is no possibility of making it a realistic possibility of fast home charge on substantial scale

RK .. I cannot see 50% of new car sales being EV in 5 years .. that is 1.5M vehs (approx) . An EV doing average mileage (12K) will use a around the same power as the average UK home (about 4KW delevered to the motors), so with battery losses perhaps 20-30% more (depending on driving).

Cumulatively by that point there would be perhaps 5M EV (to get to that level).

There is not the generating or distribution capacity currently. There is definitely not the distribution capacity to the home network, but there is a lot of spare capacity at the substation end (just not the generation capability sustained and growing). I was slightly surprised by this but had a long chat with a National Grid planner a few weeks ago who showed me some numbers.

All the tree-hugging carbon bashing in the world will not change these facts. Government must intervene and under-right national infrastructure development. Simply pointing at industry is not working and is too slow.

Well checked account today .. the sell time has gone up to 92 days ! .... basically this means not enough people are investing (despite the advertising) and/or more want to reduce or sell out.

Even if nothing sell I expect most of the money will come out eventually after a rise of bad debt. So long as what is left (turned re-invest off) returns about 55% of the total I will still be ahead over the several years ... so no need to panic.. just investment risk.
