Im afraid you're not quite correct Sean83. Syngas produced from the gasification of waste is far from sound. During my time in the waste industry, there have been numerous failures, notably AirProducts, that wrote off $1b on a failed waste to syngas project. This is AirProducts. If they cant do it, nobody can.
There are a number of Japanese gasification projects operating in Japan, however these produce very low grade syngas that is burned to power a gas turbine, not the high quality, clean syngas you need to produce fuels.
Its important to differentiate the difference between a homogeneous biomass and heterogeneous waste. You cannot compare the two.
Yes, the remainder of the process is proven, but the the syngas generation - to a composition and quality that is suitable for a FT reaction, is not. This is why smaller scale testing is imperative to prove the concept first, before going all out on a massive plant. Given the history of gasification, particularly that of AirProducts, the VLS project will not get financed.
