Due to Russia's illegal invasion of Ukraine, it is being reported in Swedish and Finnish newspapers today that their respective governments have agreed to apply for NATO membership next month.

These reports are saying that the applications will both be made at the same time in the middle of next month.

You laugh (how much exactly?), the Russian whinge away and the Ukrainians are grateful and it gives them a chance to fight an invader.
How long will the Ukrainians be enslaved for, in your opinion? Fast-track to EU membership because of Russia - is that further slavery in your opinion?
With your inside knowledge, what interest rate(s) are they being charged?

You and Putin's say 'special [military] operation', everyone else says 'illegal war'. I respect your minority opinion.

My suspicion is that anyone posting abusive personal comments will get their accounts immediately deleted, but of course that's not for me to determine.

Ceasefire is not a peace deal. A peace deal will be difficult if all Putin says is that he will stay put in Ukraine, and (incidentally mentions - not!) that he will be in a position to nuke any country he wants later this year.

Agree big-blue. China has taken a very high risk approach, and whereas Russia is relatively insignificant overall in the world economy (except in producing for oil, some raw materials and some agriculture) severe problems in China would prove very problematic, especially in Europe for manufactured goods imports and exports.

Obviously if China went into some form of large scale lockdown their need for oil and gas would also likely decline, with obvious consequences for oil producers as well. But not everyone would view lower, maybe drastically lower, oil and gas prices as a disaster though.

It's a very brave and confident statement, presented - as you have said to others on many occasions - without the presentation of any accompanying facts to support it.

Not only do they seem blissfully unaware that we're not susceptible to their charming and wholly "convincing" arguments, but also that they can get their accounts deleted for deliberately posting "misinformation".

To be fair to them, they probably do know that already, as they've likely been posting before under different user names, probably on numerous occasions.

Have you ever thought of changing your trusted sources of information? Anyway, it's probably the same unemployable man on YouTube recycling the same pictures for profit.

I noted that early in the war there were people claiming that pictures of destroyed tanks were from the war in 2014 because they were covered in rust - how could that be? Using the WWW, metallurgists say that steel could rust in as little as 4-5 days, depending on its composition, the climatic conditions, etc. What do you think to these early types of reports?

email - Agree, seems even a Russia without Putin, but with the same aspirations and mentality, is effectively the same Russia, and therefore will likely be treated in the same way.
Also can't really see how Ukraine can agree to a peace deal that gives away its own territory just because someone else thinks they should have it - there's probably 10 other despots in the world waiting for a "green light" to try something similar. Anyway, glad I'm not involved in the peace negotiations!

Novicehunter - I struggle with the same - Putin does whatever he's going to do with his superior military forces, then what?

I feel that it could be possible to state at some point that "a wanted war criminal's forces are still illegally occupying parts of Ukraine" and be factually correct, but beyond that, I'm not at all clear what may happen!

Those here super confident in claiming that there will be a quick peace deal and that ALL sanctions will be removed certainly have a very different view point to me - but of course I may be proven wrong!

Oh no! You categorically stating I won't be able to buy any white goods from China, beer from Germany, high tech electronics from Japan, cars from Korea, cheese from France, and dairy produce from Eire - holy moly, if you're right my life's no going to be worth living!
Obviously if you're in Russia you may well find this is the case.
