Interesting. Sounds like he has a lot of medical conditions, if true, some of which would likely affect his mental state and decision making.

I doubt even the most hardened and extreme in the Russian regime will relish the prospect of their children and grandchildren being vaporised in a nuclear war that Putin repeatedly warns that he won't hesitate to start.

600LT - Forgive me, but I think I've read some of your posts. I'll dig out some of your "truths", if you wish, in order to see if you still endorse them.

I only listen to what Russia have to say for my own amusement, with the comical Sergei Lavrov playing the straight man.
And to learn about, and defend my self against, the mis- and dis-information strategies - the more ridiculous their claims get, the less credibility they have (and they didn't have any before).
They'll be claiming the next nuclear weapon they're developing - perhaps the Satan 3 - will so powerful just one will be capable of destroying the whole planet - and who'll be sorry then!

Elguiri - Thanks, interesting. Re your point 1: that would have been my guess, and for obvious reasons it seems to me, but interesting to hear of someone with experience of it.
Re point 2: Fox News, etc., and their 'alternative facts' (e.g. US voter fraud) and bias and hate is extraordinary - it doesn't bode well at all for the future of US democracy in my view.

And yes, agree the UK's not perfect, but - as ever - it's all relative!

I think I heard the negotiations as they took place ...
- Ukraine: Get off our land - You are here illegally, killing our innocent citizens, destroying our infrastructure and forcing many to flee abroad.
- Russia: No - We have nuclear weapons, don't you know? And even bigger ones are coming later this year. Our 'special military operation' is still going to plan

The next round of negotiations are to be urgently arranged in order to leverage these positive developments, and Russia's more conciliatory tone.

What kind of evidence would satisfy you so that, on a balance of probability and bearing mind the potentially dire consequences, you could decide whether it was more likely to be true than not? I will endeavour to try and find some for you. The other way to think about it, is to ask yourself what if it's all wrong?

latpulldown - Once people go to ridiculous extremes with their threats they loose all their power of persuasion and credibility, and it just becomes meaningless nonsense. That's where Russia's headed.

Next they'll be claiming that for their celebrations on May 9th next year they'll show off their newly developed nuclear missile (Satan X?) that can destroy the entire population on the planet.

Whatever anyone thinks about the EU two things have surely become apparent: firstly, its one of the most power organisations in the world with some of the richest countries with very deep pockets, and secondly, its been able to coordinate many different and disparate countries into joint action against Russia.

With its recent application, that's what Ukraine's thinking (and hoping), anyway.

Lavrov and fellow protagonists all have a certain look on their faces recently, the look that says to me: "Our boss has got us into a really sticky situation here and I can't see how's he going to get us out it it. Shall I confront him? Shall I tell it how its is? No, I'll just leave it for now, and hope things improve".

Lavrov & Co (more or less what they've been saying):
"We can nuke you anytime we want, later today if we wanted, or even now ... and later in the year we'll be able to nuke a massive area with our Satan 2 missile ... for instance (picking a country at random [NOT]) destroy the whole of the UK with a single missile ... Liz Truss are you listening to us ... we know where you live ... but that doesn't really matter because the whole country will be gone anyway"

This is surely the kind of negotiating tactics that will result in certain actions by others, such as Sweden and Finland sprinting for NATO protection, and strengthening the resolve of other countries to try and put Russia "in its place" once and for all for the next few generations at least. Anyway, I don't suppose they're going to change their ways for the time being!
(I'm supremely confident that @FallingKnife2 can advise where my thinking is flawed on this matter.)

A you state, a lot has certainly been done to discourage Russia so far!
Putin can always claim it a success as only a select few know what the original plan was, so what ever it ends up being he'll claim that was the original plan - there's much logic in there somewhere.
Unlikely at the moment, but plummeting oil and gas prices might do it - IOUs for the soldiers then.

There's also an alleged $600bn in foreign reserves. I would have thought there has to be at least some chance of being able to sequestrate at least a part of this, but probably not those reserves in countries such as China.
Anyway, it's one possibility that the lawyers can argue about.
