You say Putin's regime is underpinned by financial rigour and prudence, whereas as I say it's undermined by extreme criminality, including significant financial crime. Putin is after all alleged to be the richest person in the world, not through his entrepreneurial skills, but by theft from the Russian people.
When Dmitry Medvedev tried to diversify the economy away from commodities, especially the oil and gas that are so topical at the moment, Putin stopped him. Putin also wasn't smart enough to recover the alleged $600bn of Russian foreign reserves, money that Russia will likely have to fight through the courts for and against claims for it made by Ukraine for reparations, which it's currently estimating (by Ukraine) at ~$500bn, potentially rising to $1,000+bn if this war continues for a significant period of time.
Worse still for Russia is that any peace talks will NOT include the lifting of any sanctions, the Ukrainians have stated today, firstly because they're not the sanctions of Ukraine, and secondly there's no reason to lift them while Russia illegally occupies any part of Ukraine. (see UKRInform.net)
