so to answer your question, it does not seem to be a problem, the electrolyte will be manufactured pumped into fairly standard buld liquid shipping containers and transported by rail or road to customer or to docks for onward shipping.

Madasahat, thanks for posting this, there are some interesting links from the article, esp to the MIT research, just looking up the membraneless bromine/hydrogen cell. and trying to see if similar could be applied to VRFBs.... keep getting distracted tho!

It will be true for all battery technologies, the purer your chemicals the better the battery performance.

You ever left any of those cheap "batteries included" in a device for 6 months and found they have leaked!!!

The gas only needs to be used for high voltage switching where arcing will occur. VRFBs are well below that voltage.
With increasing input from renewables coming from multiple sources you need additional switchgear to get it all onto the grid, that is where the additional use is coming into play.
Like I said there are alternatives but we probably do need to look at this as a global issue.

The electrolyte is some combination containing either sulfuric acid or sulfuric and hydrochloric acid, usually in the 4-5mol/dm3 range, so nothing particularly pokey and nothing that isn't routinely trucked around.

Im assuming Vanchem will be shipping solid vanadium oxide (powder) and the acids will be added at East London.

Surely condensation is pure water and would have simply diluted the electrolyte rather than contaminate it?

Admittedly dilution would affect the pH and possibly cause precipitation, but this is not the rain forest, there would not have been a tsunami of the stuff!

As Alfa said, we have the 'Trump random decision generator' to add to the mix these days but if you look at how effective the montreal protocol was you can see that problems can be rectified collectively!

Non SF6 switchgear is available, as with the CFC problem there are ways of mitigating and removing the problem, its just that traditionally it was the cheap and effective way of doing things.

Obviously legislation will be needed to do this, but it happened with CFC products.

I read it along the lines of:
To produce electrolyte efficiently you need a supply of vanadium oxide that is:
a) pure, the purer the better
b) has a consistent ratio of V2O3 and V2O5 or is one or the other of these oxides. This allows for a faster throughput as you are not having to adjust the chemistry of the process constantly depending of what you are being supplied with.

So would they not be adjusting the process at Vanchem to supply higher purity and consistent ratios to the electrolyte plant at East London?
