Capital FM Malawi reports
Mkango Rare Earth's Songwe Hill project in Phalombe district is set to roll out full construction of mine facilities next year, with funding from a combination of financial institutions, development partners and capital markets.
The US$400 million mining project comes as demand for rare earth remains high worldwide following the transition to modern technologies and clean energy in electronics, electric vehicles and aerospace.
Mkango's country director Burton Kachinjika has since appealed for government support as the project requires 25 megawatts of interrupted power supply, construction of a 95 kilometre high voltage power line from Blantyre to Songwe site, paved road from Migowi and streamlined preconstruction permitting process to avoid delays.
Kachinjika presented the issues to a delegation of members of the parliamentary committee on natural resources, Mining and Minerals Regulatory Authority (MMRA) and and other government officials who visited the site to appreciate progress made in readiness for the rare earth mining project.
In response, acting principal secretary for the department of mines Andrew Chisamba assured of full government support highlighting the ongoing national electricity generation initiatives and referenced funding provisions for the high voltage transmission line.
Chairperson of the parliamentary committee Tiaone Hendry who described the project as significant in economic benefits and job creation urged the project officials to obtain all necessary licenses without delay and engage the MMRA to facilitate a smooth transition into construction and production.
Upon completion, the mine is expected to produce a purified, high-value mixed Rare Earth Carbonate (MREC) in Malawi, supplying sustainable export quantities to markets across Europe, North America and Asia.
